Plan of Investigation
My group’s theme is Drugs. I chose the subtopic “Why Teens use Drugs” because my brother
had succumbed to drug abuse and I would like to know why he began using drugs in the first
place. To investigate my topic, I will use an article, a poster and a poem from a website, a book
and a newspaper. I hope to enhance my skills in summary writing, use of vocabulary, and
persuasive writing. Summary writing will be used in the written report, the use of vocabulary in

Reflection 1
Before doing this SBA, I felt teens only abused drugs to feel like adults, but during this SBA, I
The poem "Live’s Natural High," reveals that teenagers abuse drugs to feel relaxed. the speaker
says, "It makes you lose all your worries and woes,". This teaches me that teenagers abuse drugs
The poster "Teen Drug Abuse" shows teenagers who are addicted to drugs because they began
when their minds were most vulnerable and can easily be changed. I discovered that teenagers
who start using drugs at an early age are more likely to get addicted to drugs.
The article “Teenagers and Drugs” illustrates teens taking drugs to fit in with their peers. It was

Reflection 2
The poem “Life’s Natural High” uses hyperbole in the lines “Nothing on Earth Can even come
close”, to exaggerate the feelings drugs have on teens. The speaker conveys how profound this
experience is by adding that nothing else on earth can even come close to it.
The poster “Why Do Teens Use Drugs” uses the cliché “Idle hands are the devil’s tools” to
indirectly compare someone who is doing nothing to the tools of the devil. This shows that
teenagers who are bored will eventually get involved in unpleasant activities like using drugs.
Furthermore, since anyone can be bored this means it can happen to anyone.
The article Alcohol the Drug Choice for Teens uses statistics in the lines “In the past month 70
percent of 16- and 17-year-olds have used alcohol.” This statement suggests that a significant
proportion of teenagers have drunk alcohol which may have potential health consequences.

Reflection 3
Completing my English SBA has greatly improved my communication skills and significantly
more confidently in front of others. Furthermore, it enhanced my time management skills, thanks
During the research on my topic, the most striking thing I learned was the adverse effects drugs
have on people and the risk they take associating themselves with drug use. I also learned some
of the reasons behind drug abuse and discovered some potential benefits when drugs are used
responsibly.
This SBA has not only honed my English skills but also increased my understanding of the
struggles individuals face when dealing with drug addiction, the effects drugs have on people

Group Written Report
Our group's theme is "Drugs", the sub-themes chosen were, "The Medicinal Use of Drugs",
"Disadvantages of the Usage of Illegal Drugs", "Why Teens Use Drugs", and "How to Prevent
Drug Abuse". We chose this theme because of the alarming surge in drug activity in our country,
which piqued our curiosity for the reasons behind why people start abusing drugs. Despite the
unanimous decision on the theme, we faced challenges when selecting the sub-topic "The
Disadvantages Illegal Drugs". Originally, we collected twelve artifacts, each carefully chosen to
To select our artifacts, they were pooled together and each group member stated the main ideas
for the 12 artifacts. The artifacts that contained the information mostly related to the reasons why
we chose the topic and some benefits of our topic were picked and placed into sequence of how
they were explained. A group member was then assigned the role of typing the group written
report.
The cartoon strip titled "DARE-Tobacco Fact Sheet" by the Dare organization (1987), illustrated
the physical adverse effects of tobacco, highlighting the harm caused by it. Our second choice
was an article titled "Marijuana as Medicine" by New York Times (1978) which showcased the
legal medicinal applications of marijuana, demonstrating the potential benefits of certain drugs
when used responsibly. The third choice, the poster "Top Ten Reasons to Say No to Drugs" by
Bureau for At-Risk Youth, was included to emphasize the importance of avoiding illegal
drugs.
These artifacts collectively portray our group's interest and curiosity with the diverse nature of

Plan of Oral Presentation
In my oral presentation, I will be talking about “Why Teens use Drugs.” I will be doing a skit
because it will be easily remembered and for the presentation to be captivating. I wish to notify
people about the stress teenagers have to go through and what they will do to relieve it. I will be
using standard English in order to convey the seriousness of my topic to my audience. In order
for me to be able to write this skit I used a youtube video called “How to Make a Skit” by BGE
Matter.
