1. In this hanger diagram, the weight of a circle is 2 and the weight of a triangle is 5. Find
the weight of a square.

The weight of a square is 3.

2. Solve ¼ (y + 12) = ¾ (8 - y). Justify each step by showing your work.

¼ (y + 12) = ¾ (8 - y)

¼y + 3 = 6 - ¾y
+¾y +¾y

y+3=6
-3 -3

y=3

3. For each equation, decide if it is always true, sometimes true, or never true.
a. m + 4 + 3m = 2 (2m - 8)
4m + 4 = 4m - 4
4 = -4
never true

b. 19 - 5b = b + 5
19 = 6b + 5
14 = 6b
7/3 = b
sometimes true

c. -3f + 9 = 3 (3 - f)
-3f + 9 = 9 - 3f
9=9
always true

4. You can purchase a membership to Wishy Washy Car Wash for $25 per month. With
this membership, you only pay $2 per time you wash your car. If you don’t want to
purchase a membership, you can pay $8 every time you get your car washed. What is
the minimum number of car washes that makes the membership a better deal?
5 car washes

5. For what value of g do the expressions -6g + 12 and 6 (g - 6) have the same value?
g=4

The graph below shows one equation in a system of equations. Use this graph for #6 through
#8.

6. Find the equation of a second line such that the system has no solutions.
The line graphed has the equation y = -2x + 1. In order for the system to have no
solutions, the second line must have the same slope (-2) but a different y-intercept (the
y-intercept cannot be 1). Examples of equations that work are y = -2x, y = -2x + 10, y =
-2x - 5.

7. Find the equation of a second line such that the system has exactly one solution.
In order for the system to have exactly one solution, the second line must intersect the
first line in one place. The second line should not have the same slope as the first line
(the slope cannot be -2). Examples of equations that work are y = x, y = 3x + 1, y = 5.

8. Find the equation of a second line such that the system has infinitely many solutions.
In order for the system to have infinitely many solutions, the second equation must
simplify to the same first equation. This will result in the line laying on top of the
original line (appearing that there is only one line). Examples of equations that work are
y = 1 - 2x, 2y = -4x + 2, y = x + 1 - 3x.

Use the following scenario for #9 and #10. Marquis and Nikki are saving up for new iPads.
Marquis has already saved up $130 and earns $25 a week mowing lawns in his neighborhood.
Nikki has $55 in birthday money. She earns $40 a week babysitting her cousins after school.

9. Write a system of equations to represent Marquis’ savings and Nikki’s savings. Use w
for weeks and m for money.
Marquis m = 130 + 25w
Nikki m = 55 + 40 w

10. When will they have saved up the same amount of money?
After 5 weeks, they will each have $255.
