Roused at 4.30 a.m.,I want down to the stadium with the Northern Ireland
Capitain,stan Vennard,who was competing in the marathon.
I had a two-mile run in the dark around the stadium then entered the
completely empty stands to watch 17 brave,rugged men,with an assortment of
caps,hats,knotted handkerchiefs and wetted scarves,toe the line as the sun
began to creep over the rim of the arena,for the 5.30 a.m. start to the
marathon.There was jim Alder,in the navy blue vest of Scotland,carrying a
sponge,white handkerchief round his neck , and Bill Adcocks,England's
runner,similarly kerchiefed and with another knotted hanky on his head,
pattering side by side, sweating,running their own pace.The drivers of the thin-
horse-drawn carts on their way to market in kingston must have wondered what
kind f crazy people were flogging them selves along the road at that time of the
morning.
Last semester,our school had a sports events.We had softball
competition.Each class sent a team of softball to compete.I was one of
my class's team.Before the game ,the instructor explained the rules.Our
team got tothe fleid first while the other team got to bat.I aimost got a
catch but i slipped .My friend ,jack,tried to catch it but he
couldn't.Then,it came forour team to bat.Our team had two aces.They
did the best.My first hit wasn't a very good hit, and i got out.But my
next two hits were really good.I got two home runs.I heard my
classmates cheered me up.Finally ,our team passed to the final
round,but we lost to the team of the 12th graders.Even though our
team got runner-up ,l was extremely happy.I like sotfball ,and it is my
favorite sport.
