TM 3 - Scanning and Skimming
TM 3 - Scanning and Skimming
Scanning is one of the reading methods that can be used in various reading types. For instance, you read a
book or movie review. The parts that you search or scan are the title, description, director, casts, and
some best and worst comments. What becomes the characteristic of scanning is that readers find the
most important information that answers their questions. Unlike predicting or previewing, readers start
with a list of questions that need to be answered.
In academic reading, scanning is useful to save time because it is a high-speed reading. Readers are
supposed to read approximately 700 words a minute. Instead of finding the broader meaning of the text,
the overall purpose is to find the details in a text as fast as possible.

Skimming
Skimming is also one of high-speed reading techniques. It is useful for finding the main ideas or general
concept of the text. This reading technique can help readers to know what is the type or organization of a
text, where the text is possibly published, and who is the author. Unlike scanning, using skimming can
reduce readers comprehension of a text because they tend to get rid of the specific information in text.
In academic reading, skimming allows the readers to read as many articles as possible in a short time. The
purpose is to see the broader meaning and possibly the intention of the writer. From which, readers can
choose which articles are the best to meet their needs.
1. Read the following articles. Find which contains the history of tea.
a. Article 1
b. Article 2
2. Read the following articles. Determine whether the articles can be related to each other. If they
