And through all His wondrous childhood Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
He would honour and obey, Gold I bring to crown Him again,
Love and watch the lowly maiden, King forever, ceasing never,
In whose gentle arms He lay: Over us all to reign. [Refrain]
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as He. Frankincense to offer have I;
Incense owns a Deity nigh;
For He is our childhood’s pattern; Prayer and praising, voices raising,
Day by day, like us He grew; Worshipping God on high. [Refrain]
He was little, weak and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He knew; Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
And He feeleth for our sadness, Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
And He shareth in our gladness. Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
And our eyes at last shall see Him, [Refrain]
Through His own redeeming love;
For that Child so dear and gentle Glorious now behold Him arise;
Is our Lord in heaven above, King and God and sacrifice:
And He leads His children on Alleluia, Alleluia,
To the place where He is gone. Sounds through the earth and skies
[Refrain]
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
