1A. Derive the Logarithmic mean temperature difference for counter flow double pipe heat exchanger
with assumptions? (5M)
OR
1B. (a) Define Counter current flow, parallel flow and cross flow? (2M)
(b) Define penetration depth? (1M)
(c) Write overall energy balance for heat exchanger and total condenser with assumption (2M)

2A. Derive the relationship between overall heat transfer coefficient and individual heat transfer
coefficients based on the inside heat transfer area of the heat exchanger with a neat sketch and
assumptions including scaling effect? (5M)
OR
2B.The following data relate to a parallel flow heat exchanger in which air is heated by hot exhaust gases.
Heat transferred per hour ….155450 KJ
Inside heat transfer coefficient …..120 W/m2 oC
Outside heat transfer coefficient …..195 W/m2oC
Inlet and outlet temperatures of the hot fluid …...450oC and 250oC, respectively
Inlet and outlet temperatures of the cold fluid ……60oC and 120oC, respectively
Inside and outside diameters of the tube ……. 50 mm and 60 mm, respectively
Calculate the length of the tube required for the necessary heat transfer to occur. Neglect the tube
resistance. (5M)

3A. Derive a relation for the critical radius of insulation for a circular cross section having length L, r1
and r2 as inside and outside radii of pipe and r3 as outer radius of insulation. k1 and k2 be the thermal
conductivities of pipe material and insulating material respectively. Inner temperature is T 1 and outer
temperature is T2 (T1>T2) (5M)
OR
3B. Calculate the critical radius of insulation for asbestos (k=0.17 W/m K) surrounding a pipe and
exposed to room air at 293 K (20 oC) with h=3.0 W/(m2. K). Calculate the heat loss from a 473 K
(200oC), 50 mm diameter pipe when covered with the critical radius of insulation and without insulation.
Would any fibre glass insulation having thermal conductivity of 0.04 W/(m. K) cause decrease heat
transfer? (5M)
