COMPETENCIES:  Identify nail structure and shapes.

BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE LESSON:

The plate of keratin that lies on the tips of the fingers and toes is called a
nail. The primary purpose of the nail is to protect the fingers and toes. The
fingernail also helps with certain physical activities in a person’s daily life.

Structure of Nail
1. Lunula – due to the cells being pushed closer together, the lunula is pearly in
color and crescent in shape. Because of this, the blood capillaries cannot be
seen through the lunula.
2. Cuticle – it is the overlapping epidermis around the nail. It is the transparent
skin removed during the manicuring process.
3. Free edge – it is the part of the nail that is usually filed and shaped. It overlaps
the hyponychium and an extension of the nail plate.
4. Matrix – the only living reproducing part of the nail. This is directly located
below the cuticle. To produce the nail plate, the new cells are formed here and
are continually pushed forward. It also contains nerves and blood vessels where
the cells are supplied with blood for nourishment. Deformed nail growth is
possible if the matrix is damaged.
5. Nail bed – it is the continuation of the matrix and that part of the nail where the
nail plate rests on.
6. Nail walls – it is the folds of the skin that overlaps the side of the nail. They
protect the nail plate edges and hold your nail in place.
7. Nail plate – it is the visible nail that rests on the nail bed up to the free edge.
This is made up of a minimum amount of moisture and dead cells.
