Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

Running gear, axles, steering - Edition 05.2015
00 – Technical data
1 Checklist for evaluating running gear
of accident vehicles
(ERL002712; Edition 05.2015)
Damage to running gear may go unnoticed during repairs to load-
bearing and suspension parts of accident vehicles. These unno‐
ticed damages can result in serious damage to the later
functioning of the vehicle. Therefore, independently from the
wheel alignment that has to be carried out, the components listed
here must be checked, following the procedure and order descri‐
bed. If no difference was found with the specifications when
checking the wheel alignment, this means that no deformation
was found in the running gear.
Visual inspection and testing the working of the steering system
♦ Visual inspection of deformations and cracks
♦ Checking the play in the bar joints and the steering box
♦ Visual inspection to check for damage to the dustguard and
grease bellows
♦ Examine the electrical and hydraulic conduits and the hoses
looking for wear due to friction, cuts and bends
♦ Check whether the hydraulic pipes, the bolted seals and the
steering box are free of by

tached.
♦ Check the proper functioning of the complete steering angle
to both sides. The steering wheel should need uniform force
to turn and the movement should not be obstructed.
Visual inspection and testing the working of the running gear
• The tests specified below must be carried out in the following
order
♦ Check all the components in the assembly overview for de‐
formations, cracks and other damage
♦ Replace the damaged parts
♦ The wheels should only be aligned using SEAT approved
equipment.
Visual inspection and check of the working of the wheels and tyres
♦ Check the balance and concentricity
♦ Check whether the tyres have cuts or marks from knocks on
the sides and profile
♦ Check the tyre pressure. Tyre pressures are given on the in‐
side of the fuel tank cap. Take a look in the ⇒ Instructions for
rims and tyres; Rep. gr. 44 .
♦ Replace the tyre or tyres if safety is endangered.
If the rim and/or the tyre is damaged, the tyre must be replaced.
This also applies if the circumstances of the accident and the
damage to the vehicle indicate possible damage which is not visi‐
ble.
Another factor is the age of the tyre: tyres should not be older than
6 years.

The wheel bearings must not support weight when the bolt which
attaches the driveshaft from the wheel side is loose.
Do not attempt to move the vehicle without the drive shafts fitted;
this would result in wheel bearing damage. If the vehicle has to
be moved, the following must be taken into account:
– Fit an outer joint in place of the drive shaft.
6.1.1 Releasing
– If the vehicle is resting on its wheels, do not loosen the bolt
more than 90º so as not to damage the wheel bearing.
– Raise vehicle so that wheels are off the ground.
– Have second mechanic apply brakes.
– Unscrew the twelve-sided nut -arrow-.
6.1.2 Tighten
Remove corrosion located on the thread of the outer joint prior to
bolting on the nut.
– Replace the twelve-sided nut.

1) If the steering wheel is twisted, it must be straightened after
aligning the axles. Then carry out the basic adjustment of the
steering wheel angle sender - G85- using the vehicle diagnostic,
testing and information system .

throughout a tyres service life, we recommend having the wheels
and tyres balanced at least twice during the tyres service life.
3.2 Balancing
Before balancing the wheels /tyres, the following conditions
should be met:
• The tyre pressure must be correct.
• The tyre tread should not have lateral wear.
• The tread depth must be at least 4 mm.
• The tyre should not in any way be cut, punctured or contain
foreign bodies, etc.
• The suspension, steering and suspension rods including the
shock absorbers should be in perfect condition.
• A test drive should first be made.

solutely essential, as indeed it is in the case of any other repair
work you carry out. It is essential for obtaining satisfactory results.
Dirt and rust in the contact areas and the centre opening of the
wheel may distort the results.
– Clean the contact surfaces, the centre of the wheel and the
recess on the inside of the wheel before mounting the wheel
on the wheel balancer.
– Fasten the whole wheel on the balancer.
Procedure for balancing the wheel rim / tyre
– Lower the wheel balancing equipment protection cover.
– Turn the wheel or tyre on the balancer.
– Check the tyre tread while turning the wheel.

– After balancing the wheels and tyres, carry out a road test.
If any imbalance is detected during the test drive, this may be due
to tolerances in the centre of the wheel.
In unfavourable circumstances, the tolerances of the wheel com‐
ponents and the wheel hubs may be added together, this can also
cause imbalance while driving. These can be removed with a fin‐
ish balancer ⇒ page 136 .
Note
– Fit the wheel on the vehicle and tighten the bolts to the required
torques ⇒ page 110 .

ceeded, the wheel can be balanced to 0 grammes. See theo‐
retical values ⇒ page 139 .
♦ If the theoretical values for radial and/or axial run-out are ex‐
ceeded, proceed as follows.
– Deflate the tyre and separate the tyre bead from the rim con‐
tour tabs
– Turn the tyre by 90° (1/4 turn) with respect to the rim.

– Press the tyre off the rim flanges again as described above.
– Turn the tyre by 180° (1/2 turn) with respect to the rim.
If the radial and/ or lateral run-out are still not within the specified
values, check the wheel for radial and / or lateral run-out:
⇒ page 137 .
When the values for the radial and axial rim eccentricity are lo‐
cated within the tolerances, the radial and axial eccentricity of the
tyre is too high. In this case, the tyre has to be replaced.
Note
As assembly paste has been used between the tyres and the
contour of the wheel rim during the assembly of the wheel, ac‐
celeration and sharp braking should be avoided for the first 100
to 200 km. Otherwise the tyre may spin on the wheel rim and all
the above work will have been in vain.
Note
The test can not be carried out in the event of strong side winds
Note
♦ Mark the wheels / tyres before interchanging for the first time,
for example with LF, RF, LR and RR.
♦ After interchanging the wheels or turning the tyre on the wheel
rim, the performance of the vehicle should be checked on a
test drive. Make a note of how and what has changed.
♦ Assess the intensity of or possible modification to the lateral
pull.
♦ It is also important that the test drives are made by the same
person and along the same roads. It is best to drive along the
road in both directions.
♦ Replacing a tyre with a new tyre does not necessarily guar‐
antee that the pulling to one side will be eliminated. A selective
interchanging of the tyres should first be carried out as descri‐
bed below.
