Theory of knowledge - Planning and progress form

Completion of this form The completion of this form by each candidate and their teacher for theory of knowledge is a
mandatory requirement. This will strengthen the process of writing the essay and support the authenticity of a candidate's
work. Each completed form must be submitted to the IB, but will not be marked.

Candidate This form must be completed during the planning and progress of your essay. It is a record of three interactions
with your teacher. The first interaction should focus on discussing the prescribed titles and choosing the title for your essay.
In your second interaction you should discuss the development of your ideas in relation to your chosen title, and you may
present to your teacher an exploration of those ideas in some written form. This will allow you to create a plan for the
structure of your essay. For your final interaction you are encouraged to present to your teacher a full draft of your essay.
The teacher is permitted to provide written comments on your draft, but will not mark or edit your draft.

Teacher You must have at least three interactions with each candidate; one early on in the process to discuss the prescribed
titles, an interim session to discuss progress and a final session at which the candidate should present a full draft. Other
interactions are permitted, but only these three should be recorded on this form.

Planning and Candidate's comments

Date
progress You are advised to include your comments soon after each interaction
First interaction: At first, I struggled when choosing the prescribed title I want to tackle in my essay. 20/11
However, I analyzed two titles to be able to make a choice, and after exploring these
potential titles, I found myself captivated by the titles which addressed ‘the acceptance of
knowledge claims always involves trust” Thus, as one whose personal engagements and
studies are rather balanced, I believed that I would be very engaged with the title if I were
to explore it through contrasting two of the areas of knowledge that I’ve believed are
interesting, Natural Sciences and Religious Knowledge Systems.

Second interaction: After having time to explore and scrutinize my prescribed title, I decided to explore how 15/12
scientific experiments allow trust to be involved in natural sciences after the involvement
of doubt as I considered the WOKs associated with this (e.g. reason). For RKS, I
explored the two main categories I believed to exist, the first to be the rituals and religious
instructions, and the second involving the spiritual aspect which relies on personal
knowledge. This enlightened me into exploring the experimental nature of sciences and
its impact on accepting knowledge claims in this AOK, in contrast to RKS, we accept
knowledge claims in natural sciences through doubting, experimenting, then trusting.

Third interaction: After writing my first draft, I was able to discuss my essay with my teacher in order to 20/1
further develop these initial ideas. As I focused on discussing concepts that are personal
because I believe that I can thoroughly explore and analyze my experiences and link
them to the KQ. For example, I linked natural sciences to the current coronavirus
pandemic to explore that natural sciences has a complicated relationship with trust and
that it could not be always involved.

Prescribed title: “Accepting knowledge claims always involves an element of trust.”
