Prefixes: A prefix is a group of letters that you add to the beginning of a word to give it a different meaning - often the opposite. This exercise will help expand your vocabulary by learning new prefixes. Common Prefixes A. Prefixes are letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word with a different meaning, Prefixes can, for example, create a new word opposite in meaning to the word itis attached to. They can also make a word negative or express relations of time, place, or manner. There are only a few general rules for when to use a hyphen with a prefix. However, there are no hard rules. The best advices to be consistent throughout your writing. 1. Ifthe prefix is used before a proper noun, use a 2 hyphen. eg. un-British, mid-June.
