OVERVIEW
Acute tonsillopharyngitis is an inflammation of the tonsils
and pharynx, usually caused by viral or bacterial
infections. It is a common condition characterized by sore
throat, difficulty swallowing, and other associated
symptoms.

CAUSES
1. Viral Infections: Commonly caused by viruses such as
adenovirus, influenza virus, and Epstein-Barr virus.
2. Bacterial Infections: Streptococcus pyogenes (Group

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS


Objective Data:
1. Red and Swollen Tonsils: Visible inflammation and
enlargement.
2. White or Yellow Exudates: Pus on the tonsils.
3. Swollen, Tender Lymph Nodes: Palpable lymph nodes in the
neck.
4. Fever: Elevated body temperature.
5. Erythema of the Pharynx: Redness in the throat.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS


Subjective Data:
1. Sore Throat: Pain or discomfort while swallowing.
2. Difficulty Swallowing: Dysphagia due to throat inflammation.
3. Headache: Commonly associated with the infection.
4. Malaise: General feeling of discomfort or unease.
5. Cough: Sometimes present if the infection extends to the lower
respiratory tract.

COMPLICATIONS
1. Peritonsillar Abscess: Collection of pus around the
tonsils.
2. Rheumatic Fever: An inflammatory disease that can

NURSING MANAGEMENT
Assessment

Assess for difficulty swallowing, cough, and associated symptoms.
Hydration and Comfort Measures:
Encourage increased fluid intake to prevent dehydration.
Provide throat lozenges, warm saline gargles, and pain relievers to
alleviate discomfort.

Isolation Precautions:
Implement precautions to prevent the spread of infection,
especially if the cause is bacterial.
