Reflection Appendix E

I have already decided on the engineering discipline that I wish to pursue in my

educational studies and hopefully my future career. For me that discipline was chemical

engineering with material/metallurgical engineering being a close second. The greatest

influences on my decision were engineers in my family, who have experience in the industry and

often talk to me about it, the challenging school material that comes with a discipline like

chemical engineering that keeps me engaged mentally, the societal and material benefits from

working as an engineer, the large variety of industries available to work in as an engineering

major, and a general appeal for the work engineers do. Admittedly, I have no engineering

experience as of now but for the next summer I have an internship with Raytheon in their

materials division for aerospace that will hopefully expose me towards more elements that will

further cement my decision to work towards being in this field. I am still able to take many

different paths in my life and I will earnestly pursue the opportunities that are present before me.

I have had a few jobs in my short career that I did not enjoy that played some part in me deciding

to take my studies seriously so I could succeed in obtaining a diploma in STEM, in order to

ensure my future in a better paying field of my choice. For me, those jobs were working in fast

food at a local Jack in the Box. I was the cashier for the front and drive-thru during my stay their

and my other duties mainly consisted of stocking the freezer, cleaning the dining area and

equipment, and dishwashing. The work was boring with low pay and often I had to deal with a

lot of rude customers and co-workers. There are definitely better jobs than fast food that one

could get without a college degree, but this job(which I have no regrets over) definitely cemented

the idea in my mind that you need to work hard to obtain the things you want in life.
