CLASSROOM PROCEDURE

INTRODUCTION TIME

Introduction 5 min
Today's investigation is centered on the categorization of pure substances
and mixtures, crucial for grasping the nuanced properties that define
matter. Our objective is to provide you with a comprehensive, hands-on
exploration of these concepts through a series of observation stations,
employing methods such as visual inspection, solubility testing,
conductivity analysis, and microscopic examination. By actively engaging
in this structured inquiry, you will refine your analytical skills and cultivate
a practical understanding of chemical principles. Join us as we embark on
this scientific journey to unravel the intricacies of pure substances and
mixtures, paving the way for a richer comprehension of the world of
chemistry.

BODY TIME

Activity #1 Objective: Students will understand the categorization of pure substances 40 min
and mixtures through hands-on exploration and analysis of various
examples.
Materials:

Samples of pure substances (e.g., iron, copper, sugar, salt)

Samples of mixtures (e.g., saltwater, trail mix, air freshener spray)
Microscopes
Beakers and test tubes
Distilled water
Bunsen burners (optional)
Conductivity tester
Safety goggles and lab coats
Introduction (15 minutes):
Begin with a brief overview of pure substances and mixtures, discussing
their definitions and fundamental differences. Emphasize the importance of
categorization in understanding the properties of materials.

Pre-Lab Discussion (10 minutes):

Discuss the experimental procedures, safety precautions, and the
significance of each testing method (visual inspection, solubility,
conductivity, etc.).

Procedure:

Observation Stations (30 minutes):

Station 1: Visual Inspection

Students visually inspect and record observations about the appearance of
each sample.
Station 2: Solubility
Students test the solubility of samples in distilled water and categorize them
as soluble or insoluble.
Station 3: Conductivity
Using a conductivity tester, students determine whether samples conduct
electricity.
Station 4: Melting and Boiling Points
For applicable samples, students observe and record melting and boiling
points.

In groups, students analyze their data, categorizing each sample as a pure

substance or mixture based on the observed properties.
Discuss findings as a class, encouraging students to articulate the reasoning
behind their categorizations.
Conclusion (10 minutes):
Wrap up the lab by revisiting key concepts, summarizing observations, and
reinforcing the importance of categorization in understanding material
properties.

Assessment Students will complete a laboritoy report based on their lab experience.
Rationale

The "Exploring Pure Substances and Mixtures: Categorization Lab" is designed to provide students with

a tangible understanding of the core concepts of pure substances and mixtures in chemistry. This

hands-on experience is crucial for reinforcing theoretical knowledge by immersing students in practical,

real-world applications. By actively engaging with various samples and employing diverse testing

methods, students will enhance their observational and analytical skills. The categorization aspect of the

lab promotes critical thinking, requiring students to apply their understanding of properties such as

solubility, conductivity, and microscopic structure to make informed decisions about the nature of each

sample. This lab not only facilitates a deeper comprehension of chemical concepts but also fosters a

sense of curiosity and discovery, laying the foundation for more advanced studies in the fascinating field

of chemistry.
