PMAL101: Cross-Cultural
Communication
Unit 2: Using English in International
Communication

In your opinion, does using English as an international language provide more

advantages or disadvantages? Why?
Response:

Using English as an international language offers both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages:
1. It facilitates global communication and understanding, making it easier for people from different
linguistic backgrounds to connect, do business, and collaborate on a global scale. 2. It has become the
dominant language in fields like science, technology, and entertainment, which can provide
opportunities for those who are proficient in English. Disadvantages: 1. This dominance can also be
seen as a disadvantage, as it may perpetuate linguistic and cultural imperialism, marginalise non-
native English speakers, and limit diversity in international discourse. 2. The global prominence of
English may contribute to the decline of lesser-known languages and dialects as they are less
frequently used in international contexts. Ultimately, the advantages and disadvantages of using
English as an international language depend on one's perspective and the specific context in which it
is employed.
