Tutorial No. 4

1. Find an equation of the line that satisfies the given conditions.

i. Through (1,2); parallel to the line y = 3x-5

ii. Through (-3,2); perpendicular to the line y = -1/2x + 7
iii. Through (4, 5) parallel to the x – axis.

2. The equations of two lines are given. Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular, or
neither.

3. Find the equation of each of the following circles of centre (0, 0) and,
i Containing the point (-5, 2).
ii Containing the point (0, 3).

4. Find the equation of each of the following circles, with given centre and radius:
i
Centre (-2, -4) and radius 5.
ii
Centre (7, 0) and radius √3.
iii Centre (-1, 3) and radius 5/2.

iv Centre (-2, -3) and containing point (3, 0).

v Centre (-2, -3) and containing point (0, 0).

5. Write down radius length of each following circle.

i 9x2 + 9y2 = 25
ii 16x2 + 16y2 = 1

6. Find the equation of the circle which has line segment joining (-3, 4) to (4, -3) as diameter.

7. (6, -3) is an extremity of a diameter of the circle x2 + y2 = 45. What are the coordinates of the other
extremity of same diameter?

8. Identify the centre and radius of the following circles:
