Research achievements
I have done various research studies in the field of combustion and new technologies in combustion
during my Ph.D. degree. The output of this research led to the publication of three articles in
international journals.
During my Ph.D. degree, I developed the eddy dissipation concept (that is used to model chemical-
turbulence interaction) to be used with LES turbulence model. By doing this, the accuracy of the
turbulent combustion simulation results increased. In EDC model there are two constants that have
a great impact on the accuracy of numerical results and researchers have proposed different values
for these constants. In my dissertation, I addressed this issue and obtained these two constants
using inverse analysis method. By comparing the numerical results with the experimental results,
it was found that the accuracy of the results had improved. I have also made some other attempts
in the dissertation to improve the furnace performance. I used hot obstacles in combustion chamber
and swirl input air-flow to have a better combustion. The results indicated that the inclusion of
these factors improved the combustion process and increased its efficiency.
In 2019, I was recognized as the top researcher among Ph.D. students in the mechanical
engineering department of Shiraz University, due to the studies I conducted in the field of
combustion.
In 2016, at the mechanical engineering department of Chamran University of Ahvaz, I collaborated
as a member of a close-knit team of researchers from different disciplines and universities. The
purpose of this project was simulating a mobile drilling machine that was developed for Iran's
National Oil Drilling Company and I was the director of the fluid department of this research.
In 2021, I caried out a project for Nourabad gas company in Fars, Iran. The purpose of this project
was to reduce gas consumption in pressure reduction station using solar and geothermal energies.
The results showed that using PVT solar cells and bore hole heat exchanger could reduce the gas
consumption by 40%. The investment return period was 5 years, while the useful life of this
equipment was at least 10 years.
Research plan
My short-term (2-5years) goal is to investigate the reactive flows especially combustion
phenomena very deeply and improving combustion performance. I have some idea to accomplish
this goal by (a) using porous media in the combustion chamber and investigating its effect on
combustion performance; (b) investigating methods of fuel injection into the combustion chamber
in order to have a more homogeneous mixture of fuel and oxidizer; and developing a new
combustion model so that we can have a more comprehensive combustion model to predict
combustion behavior and thereby increase the accuracy of numerical simulation results.
Additionally, I want to improve my skills in numerical solution techniques and gain more
knowledge and expertise in the field of combustion phenomena.

Nowadays there are many concerns about global warming, environmental impacts and the
depletion of fossil fuel reserves. However, the role of fossil fuels in supplying energy cannot be
ignored. Thus, in my long-term research, I plan to work on new technologies such as clean
combustion and high temperature combustion, so that the amount of pollutants caused by
combustion can be reduced and also increase efficiency. Also, I plan to work on renewable energy
like bioenergy and improve their efficiency, because this type of energy is environment-friendly
and has many benefits. Finally, I would like to work with a group of experts and students in a
specialized laboratory so that I can increase and deepen my knowledge and experience in these
areas.

Sincerely,
Mohammad Mansourian
