1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This specification defines technical requirements for the design, material, fabrication, testing, inspection,
and preparation for shipment of packaged Cold Box insulation systems in cryogenic service. A Cold Box is
defined as a light wall vessel that houses multiple cryogenic components for the purpose of insulating by blown-
in insulation.
1.1.2 The equipment and materials furnished with the Cold Box vessel by the Supplier shall include the
following in addition to any requirements specified in the Cold Box Package Specification Sheet:
a. Plate-fin exchangers and/or drums which includes all interconnecting piping, piping supports, and piping
that extends through the Cold Box wall boots
b. Exchanger support beams, supports, and bolting
c. Dry nitrogen purge header
d. Lifting lugs for erection
e. Internal ladders or ladder rungs
f. One block valve with bleed plug for each fluid stream requiring drainage
g. Fireproofing, surface preparation, and paint
h. Pressure vacuum relief valve
i. Pressure gauge
j. Thermowells for thermocouples
k. External ladders, platforms, and handrails and attachment clips
l. Shipping skids and crating
m. Instruments and valves as noted in the requisition specifications.
The following documents are referenced herein and form part of the order. Additional KBR documents, when
applicable, will be listed on the requisition. The issue dates of KBR documents shall be as specified in the
Requisition. Current editions of the industry standards including all mandatory addenda in effect at the time of
the Order shall apply unless otherwise indicated. Documents referenced within the documents listed below
apply to all Cold Box Package components.

1.3 Quotations
1.3.1 Proposals shall include a general erection/installation plan for shop assembled Cold Box systems with an
estimate of the hours of labor required from a referenced location.
1.3.2 Proposed piping shall include and specify reducers and transition joints as needed for attachment to
external lines. Piping through the Cold Box wall shall be the same size and material as the external line size.
1.3.3 Proposals shall include detail sketches for any proposed variations from Figures 1 and 2.
1.3.4 Proposal drawings shall clearly identify the application and location of spring supports.
1.4 Guarantee
The manufacturer shall guarantee the mechanical and functional performance of all components of the Cold Box
System for 12 months after its placement in the specified service, but not exceeding 24 months from the date of
shipment. The manufacturer shall repair or replace, without charge, any defect found within the guarantee
period that results from work or material originating with the manufacturer.
2. DESIGN
2.1.1 Additional industry standards apply only when specified in the Requisition.
2.1.2 The Cold Box shall support all internals and insulation (installed specific gravity of 0.066) internally and for
any loads that can be applied in testing, handling, shipping, installation, or specified operations.
2.1.3 Cold Box internals shall be positioned to allow a minimum of 12 in. (300 mm) for insulation between heat
exchangers and the vessel walls or 6 in.(150 mm) from structural members.
2.1.4 Provide 36 in. (900 mm) clearance above internal components for installation of insulation.
2.1.5 All instrument, electrical, utility tie-ins shall be accessible at the floor level in junction boxes with doors that
open external to the Cold Box.
2.1.6 No flanged or screwed joints are permitted inside the Cold Box.
2.1.7 Pipe terminals of the Cold Box shall be the same material as connecting pipes and penetrate the wall
through flexible boots. See Figure 1 for typical details.
2.1.8 Attachments such as lugs, clips, and pipe supports shall have a 1/8 in. (3 mm) seal weld on all sides.
2.1.9 Nozzle necks, manholes, or access hatches shall be welded to the Cold Box shell either by full
penetration or double fillet welds.
2.1.10 Exchanger support shall be thermally insulated form the Cold Box support beams as shown in Figure 2.
2.1.11 Detail drawing acceptance by KBR of two-phase flow distributors and headers is required prior to
ordering materials or beginning fabrication.

2.1.12 The Supplier shall provide a sampling nozzle for hydrocarbon testing (to penetrate the ceiling of the Cold
Box).
2.1.13 Two-phase separation drums, if provided, shall have a drain line penetrate the wall (or floor) of the Cold
Box. Block valve will be provided by the Purchaser.
2.1.14 Twenty four (24) inch manways are to be located in the ceiling and the bottom of a wall of the Cold Box.
Two sets of gaskets for each manway are required.
2.1.15 Supplier shall show lifting/moving lugs and center of gravity on the outline drawing.
2.2.1 A dry nitrogen purge distributor shall be provided to uniformly purge or dry insulation.
2.2.2 The purge distributor shall be wrapped with two layers of fine mesh fiberglass blanket, tied with stainless
steel wire, to prevent insulation from entering distributor openings.
2.2.3 Cold boxes shall be shipped under nitrogen purge with nitrogen bottles.
2.3.1 Static (dead) loads shall be the dry weight of equipment provided plus fireproofing.
2.3.2 Dynamic (live) loads in addition to wind, earthquake, operating, maintenance, and piping loads; require
the following minimum limitations.
2 2
a. For floor plate or grating apply at least 100 lbs/ft (4788 Pa) (488 kg/m ).
2 2
b. For floor framing apply 75 lbs/ft (3591 Pa) (366 kg/m ) or a moving concentrated load of 500 lb (225 kg).
2 2
c. For columns and brackets apply 25 lb/ft (1197 Pa) (122 kg/m ) or a moving concentrated load of
500 lb (225 kg).
d. For ladders apply a moving vertical concentrated load of 20 lb/ft (30 kg/m) but not less than 200 lb (90 kg)
total.
2 2
e. For stairs apply the greater of 75 lbs/ft (3591 Pa) (366 kg/m ) or a moving concentrated load of
1000 lb (455 kg).
3. FABRICATION
3.2 See Standards ASTM A36-36M, ASTM A307, ASTM A325, ASTM E165 and NAAMM MBG 531-891 as
applicable.
5.2 Supplier shall include touch-up paint with its Martial Safety Data Sheet in the shipment of the Cold Box.
