ELECTRICAL MOTORS II

ASSIGNMENT 1

A 230V, 750rpm 25A dc series motor is driving at rated condition, a load whose torque is
proportional to the speed squared. The combined resistance of armature and field is 1Ω.
Calculate motor terminal voltage ad current for a speed of 400rpm.

Solution.

V=230V, N1=750rpm , Ia1=25A

Rt( Ra + R se)=1Ω, N2=400rpm.

Recall

Ф α Ia

Ta α Ф

Also

Ta α N2

Ia α N

hence

Ia1 α N1 and Ia2 α N2.

𝐼𝑎2/𝐼𝑎1=𝑁2/𝑁1

Ia2=Ia1*𝑁2/𝑁1

Ia2= 25 ∗400/750

Ia2=40/3A.

Eb1=V-Ia1 (Ra + Rse) = 230 -25 * 1=205V.

Eb2=V-Ia2 (Ra + Rse) = 230 -40/3∗ 1 =217.67V

Ф1/Ф2=25*3/40

= 1.875.

𝑁2/𝑁1=𝐸𝑏2/𝐸𝑏1∗Ф1/Ф2

400/750 =(𝑉 − (40/3)) ∗ 1.875/205

V= 403/5.675

V= 71.64 𝑉.

Hence

For a speed of 400rpm, current = 13.33 𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 = 71.64 𝑉 should be supplied.
