BUILDING BACKGROUND

In 1971 the School of Arts and Architecture had undergone major

reorganization, and this led to establishment of two separate schools, one,
which emphasized on the built environment, and the other on the arts and
design.

The faculty was established with the initial enrolment of 162 students under
what became known as the School of Applied Arts, which was later
converted to the School of Arts and Architecture.

Subsequently, the built environment school was named the School of

Architecture, Planning and Surveying which was later known as the College
of Built Environment. However, the acronym "CBE" (which means College of
Built Environment) is commonly used in UiTM. This cafeteria is located
adjacent to Library and Information Science Research’s building.

CASE STUDY
CASE STUDY 1 - PAK TAM CAFE
Pak Tam Café is a compact sized cafe
situated near Main Entrance to
Universiti of Malaya’s Medical Centre.
The Site constraint enable the designer
to be creative in incorporating
maximum numbers of seating by using
smaller size tables and chairs while at
the same time provide sufficient space
between the tables for access to the
wheel-chair bound and also providing a
ramp to enter the cafe. Prominent
signages, properly designed
racks/shelves enable the café owner to
maximise storage while at the same
time using the available space to
advertise the foods and beverages.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design for upgrading works for

CBE Café would emphasise on
INDUSTRIAL CONCEPT.

Industrial Design Style embraces

exposed architectural elements like
pipes, bricks and concrete and
MINIMALIST design philosophy.

Generally, Industrial Design Style also

include bare-bulbs, open floor plans
and a cool, neutral colour palette.

Internal Wall Finishes, Internal Floor

Finishes and Furniture

NATURAL COLOUR in wall/floor finishes and

RUSTIC TONE to the tables and chairs will
blend well and create A NICE BALANCE OF
ARCHITECTURAL VIEW to the surrounding.

Internal floor using non-slip tiles: have wide

colour range, for EASY MAINTENANCE &
SAFETY PURPOSES.

A VARIETY of SEATING ARRANGEMENT:

ACCOMMODATE CUSTOMER’S NEEDS and
also give CHARACTER and UNIQUE LOOK to
the cafe.

SITI NURMARLINA | HAWWA NISWA | MOHD ISKANDAR | AIMAN DZULHELMY SHAZWAN | IZZUANI AZILA
Natural Lighting & Enhancing Design DESIGN CONCEPT
Flexibility / Natural Ventilation
Glass window/door panels installed at boundary between
two spaces TO MAINTAIN SPATIAL CONNECTION
(CONTINUITY). Large glass window panels installed at
external walls maximises the penetration of natural
daylight (For air-conditioned eating area - facing morning
daylight). According to studies, being in NATURAL LIGHT
can IMPROVE MOOD and INCREASE HAPPINESS.

By opening up perimeter walls & make use of existing

adjacent space - ALLOWS THE CAFE TO SPILL OUT INTO
the OUTDOOR AREA which ENHANCE the FLEXIBILITY OF
THE SPACE. This will also reinforce the PERCEPTION OF A
LARGER SPACE, visually connecting the indoors and
outdoors.

Also by minimising enclosures (except for West side of

the cafe building in order to reduce the emittance of heat
from evening sunlight), the eating area will receive CROSS
AIR VENTILATION which will assist in thermal comfort.

SITI NURMARLINA | HAWWA NISWA | MOHD ISKANDAR | AIMAN DZULHELMY SHAZWAN | IZZUANI AZILA
DESIGN CONCEPT
Acoustic Ceiling Panel

By using acoustics ceiling, it will make

the café to be COMFORTABLE place to be
WITHOUT EXCESSIVE NOISE and will be
one of the crucial reason PEOPLE WILL
RETURN TO THE CAFE especially for
USING THE SPACE FOR DISCUSSION.

SITI NURMARLINA | HAWWA NISWA | MOHD ISKANDAR | AIMAN DZULHELMY SHAZWAN | IZZUANI AZILA
DESIGN CONCEPT

Water Element and Trees/Vegetation

Within architecture, water evokes sentiments of
calmness and wellbeing. The use of fountains,
reflecting pools or other WATER FEATURE CAN HELP
TO HIGHLIGHT a SPECIFIC PART OF SPACE. They can
also add to the outdoor aesthetic.

Most of the existing trees and vegetation are

maintained whereby they are not only creatures of
beauty and grandeur but also will act as shading
device. The evapotranspiration process of the
TREES/VEGETATION will LOWER THE TEMPERATURE
by increasing air humidity and subsequently
lowering the surrounding air temperature. Also the
trees will also help to ABSORB the NOISE coming
from vehicular movement.

SITI NURMARLINA | HAWWA NISWA | MOHD ISKANDAR | AIMAN DZULHELMY SHAZWAN | IZZUANI AZILA
DESIGN CONCEPT

Material for Entranceway & Ramp

The upgrading works of external

walkway/steps/ramp will be of natural
colours to blend with the interior design
concept. For safety, the material will
also be of non-slip surface.

The introduction of a NEW WHEEL-CHAIR

RAMP will make the café more
ACCESSIBLE and WELCOMING TO THE
DISABLED.

SPECIFICATION
TARGET MARKET
VISITORS TO THE UNIVERSITY,
POTENTIAL STUDENTS
By upgrading the interiors/exterior to a suitably
STYLISH DESIGN CONCEPT, it will not only attract
more visitors to CBE Café but also will BOOST THE
IMAGE of UiTM’s College of Built Environment to
the general public and could also be one of the
reasons for potential students deciding to pursue
their education here.

STUDENTS, LECTURERS AND STAFFS

The main target market will be the
undergraduate and postgraduate students,
lecturers and staffs at CBE and also other
students, lecturers and staffs in the UiTM
Campus since CBE is one of the highest points
in UiTM Shah Alam. By adding a LARGER AIR-
CONDITIONED SPACE that CAN ALSO BE
UTILISED BY STUDENTS, hopefully the café will
get more students & lecturers coming here not
only for eating and discussion purpose but also
to enjoy the views of the café surrounding.
ESTIMATED
CONSTRUCTION COST
CONCLUSION
The upgrading works of CBE Cafeteria will boost the
image of CBE and will also bring many benefits to the
students, lecturers and staff’s of CBE.

This project will enhance and beautify the

surroundings of the building and will also create a
comfortable and relaxing place of interest to the User.

The new concept of this proposal is industrial and

natural lighting. The use of resource-efficient
materials and environmentally responsible processes
proves that this is an eco-friendly development

Upon completion of this project, hopefully CBE

Cafeteria can become one of the most attractive
eatery and as a “One Stop” meeting place in UiTM
Shah Alam.
