Yasi: This is us.

Nikoo: Yasi and Nikoo.

Yasi: We’re your teachers and friends.

Music

Yasi: In the previous episode, we started our journey in Toronto, Canada. We’ll be
here for a month to explore the city!

Nikoo: And the first thing we did was to use the subway! We got off at Queen’s
Park stop, but then decided to check out Harbor Front and lake Ontario which are
in the downtown.

Yasi: And now we’re in downtown. We decided to walk around today and check out
some interesting spots! It’s early June and the weather is quite warm! So are you
ready to explore Nikoo?

Nikoo: Yes, but first coffee of course!

Yasi: Oh yeah. I need some coffee in my system as well.

Nikoo: Is there a Starbucks around here?

Yasi: I think Canada has Tim Hortons instead of Starbucks. Canadians call it Tim’s So
let’s go find a Tim Hortons.

Nikoo: We could use Google Maps to find the nearest coffee shop.

Yasi: Yeah, but let’s do it the old-fashioned way and ask around. Oh, look, someone
is walking this way. I’ll ask her.

Music

Yasi: Hi, excuse me, can you tell me where to find a Tim Hortons?

Pedestrian: Oh sure! Just walk up this street and make a left at that traffic lights
over there. There is a Tim Hortons just around that block.

Yasi: Got it! Thank you so much!

Nikoo: The weather sure is nice this time of year here!

Yasi: Yes it is! I hear the winters are pretty harsh, though.

Nikoo: Mmm. And what do you think of this city so far?

Yasi: I like it a lot! I think it kinda looks like New York and the people are super polite
and friendly!

Nikoo: Yeah, and the interesting thing is that we see people of all ethnicities! This
city is a melting pot!

Yasi: Ethnicity means race like black, white, Asian, and … And melting pot means a
place where different peoples, styles, theories, etc. are mixed together. Toronto is
a melting pot of different cultures.

Music

Yasi: Now we’re at Tim Hortons and we’re gonna order coffee here.

Nikoo: There is a line here so we have to stand in line first.

Walking

Nikoo: Hi, can I have a large double double ?

Barista: Alright.

Barista: Here you are. A dollar eighty.

Nikoo: Keep the change.

Sipping at our coffee

Yasi: I got a mocha and Nikoo got double double. Nikoo what is a double double ?

Nikoo: The first double refer to milk or cream, so double means two servings of
cream. The second double refers to sugar so it means two servings of sugar.

Nikoo: Yasi, you OK? You look so pale!

Yasi: Well, I’m on my period and I have cramps!

Nikoo: Oh no! You gotta take an Advil, that will help with the pain.

Yasi: Yeah, but I don’t have any Advil on me now. We need to find a pharmacy.

Nikoo: Let me ask that lady over there.

Nikoo: Excuse me. Can you point me to the nearest pharmacy?

Lady: I’m sorry. I’m not from around here.

Nikoo: That’s OK, thank you.

Music

Nikoo: She wasn’t a local. She didn’t know.

Yasi: That’s fine. Let me ask the man sitting next to me.

Music

Yasi: Excuse me. Can you give me quick directions to a pharmacy?

The man: Sure, there is one in Front St West. Walk down to Front St West and make
left. It’s across from Berczy Park. It’s called Rexall.

Yasi: Thank you very much!

Nikoo: We’ve been walking for half an hour! I think we’re lost! Just look it up on
Google Maps.

Yasi: I want to! But there is a problem with my network connection. It’s not working.

Nikoo: Damn. Oh, let me ask that girl over there to help us.

Music

Nikoo: Excuse me. Can you give me a minute of your time?

Girl: Sure.

Nikoo: Thank you k. I’m pretty new in town, and I think I might be lost.

Girl: Do you need to make a phone call?

Nikoo: No, thank you. I just need some directions.

Girl: Where are you trying to get to?

Nikoo: I need to find my way to Rexall pharmacy.

Girl: Rexall? You’re not far off from there.

Nikoo:Great, can you tell me where it is?

Girl: Gladly! You’re going to walk straight down this street.

Nikoo: Alright, straight down.

Girl: Then you make a right after two blocks.

Nikoo: Alright, I got that.

Girl: Then a left at the next street, and It should be there.

Nikoo: Thank you so much.

Girl: You’re welcome.

Music

Yasi: We finally found the place! But by the time we got there, my cramps had al-
ready disappeared.

Nikoo: We got some Advil, though. Just in case…

Yasi: Yeah. Anyways, in this lesson we learned how to ask for directions.

Nikoo: Now let’s go through all the directions and review them.

Yasi: We have north and south.

Nikoo: East and west.

Yasi: Go straight ahead, means keep going without turning. You can also say go
straight on.

Nikoo: And for changing direction, we can say turn right or make a right.

Yasi: Turn left of make a left.

Nikoo: When you give directions in the city, you might use the word block.

Yasi: Like go straight ahead for two blocks.

Nikoo: A block is usually one or some buildings together. Blocks are separated by
streets or roads.

Yasi: Go across the street or cross the street means to go from one side of the
street to the other.

Nikoo: You can also use go across for a bridge. Go across the bridge.

Yasi: Opposite: If I say that the store is opposite the bank, it means that they are on
two sides of the street and they face each other.

Nikoo: And if I say that the store is next to the bank, it means that they are side by
side.
