Nikoo: And this time, we’re gonna hang out in the city and have fun!
Yasi: Yeah, in this course, we’re gonna go to different places around the city such
as cafes, restaurants, barbershop and …
Nikoo: So in this lesson, first let’s get to know some expressions and words you
need to know about cities and towns.
Music
Nikoo: First of all, what is a city? I mean what is the difference between a city, a
town and a village?
Yasi: A city is larger than a town, and a town is larger than a village. A city usually
has more than 1 million residents, but a village has a few hundred to a few thou-
sand.
Nikoo: Aha. And then we have different areas in a city, right? Like downtown. What
is a downtown? Is it like a poor neighborhood?
Yasi: No! Downtown is actually the central part or the main business area of a town
or city. For example, Enghelab is Tehran’s downtown area.

Episode 1
Yasi: A city or town usually consists of the suburbs, a downtown, lots of shops and
buildings like gyms, companies, cinemas, banks, public transport and …
Yasi: A suburb of a city or large town is a smaller area which is part of the city or
large town but is outside its center. If you live in the suburbs, you live in an area of
houses outside the center of a large town or city.
Nikoo: Aha! Like those big houses in the movies right? With a backyard, lots of
trees and clean! Like in Desperate Housewives or Modern Family?
Yasi: Exactly! But not like FRIENDS, they used to live in the city.
Yasi: Public transport or public transportation includes buses, trains, trams and
other forms of transport that are available to the public, to the people, and they
don’t charge a lot and they run on a fixed schedule.
Nikoo: A fixed schedule? Well, I don’t think that’s true everywhere. I remember
how I used to wait hours for a bus to finally arrive!
Music
Yasi: As you know, Nikoo and I love traveling! Last time we visited India and now
we’re in Toronto! Yes, can you believe it?? So we’re gonna explore the city together
and compare it with our own city Tehran as well!
Music
Nikoo: Everything is so huge here! And the taxi fares are pretty insane! I checked
the famous taxi hail apps, Uber, but the prices shocked me!
Nikoo: In American English they say subway and in British English they call it the
underground . In London they call it the Tube too.
Music
Subway noise
Yasi: As a tourist, you can get some special cards to use for public transport, for
example the Visitor Oyster Card in London. You can also get the card the locals
use like Istanbul Card in Istanbul Turkey. I remember using it for all sorts of public
transport and public restrooms!

Episode 1
Nikoo: Today, though, we’re not in Istanbul nor in London. We’re in Toronto! So let’s
listen to a conversation that we had at the subway:
Clerk: You can buy a ticket for a single ride that expires two hours after it’s issued.
If you’re going to be here all week, I’d suggest getting PRESTO Card if you are a
frequent rider. Otherwise, I’d recommend getting a pass from that vending ma-
chine over there.
Yasi: We’re gonna be here for a month so I think we should get two PRESTO cards.
How much is each ride?
Clerk: It’s $2.00. If you buy a PRESTO Card worth more than $10.00, you get a 20%
discount. So with a $10 card, you get six rides instead of five. The card allows you
to transfer to buses, too.
Yasi: Thanks, but I’m not sure which line to take to Queen’s Park.
Clerk: Here’s a subway map. Follow the signs to the platform of the train you want.
Music
Nikoo: So now that we’ve got our PRESTO Card, we can go ride the subway. But
I’m gonna pretend I don’t know how it works. Let’s listen to another conversation.
Nikoo: I’ve never taken the subway before. I don’t know how it works.
Yasi: Just follow me. Here, take this card and walk through the turnstile. Put your
card in this slot and then retrieve it as you pass through.
Yasi: Let’s look at this subway map showing all of the lines. That’s the station we
want.
Nikoo: So according to this map, we need to get off after 5 stops and change trains
to get on the yellow line, right?
Yasi: Bravo! You’re good! Let’s go! We don’t wanna miss that train.

Yasi: We’re gonna be here for a month so I think we should get two PRESTO cards.
