1. OBJECTIVE
To ensure smooth, safe and conscious operating procedure for heavy furnace oil (HFO) unloading
and storage.
2. DESCRIPTION
HFO is imported to the site by means of tankers. A truck unloading station consists of flexible hoses,
suction strainers, unloading pumps and manifolds to transfer the truck contents into the HFO tank.
Two unloading pump with the capacity of 500 liters per min. The truck unloading operation is totally
manual.
The volume of the HFO storage tanks is of 550 m3, which corresponds to the fuel requirement for
seven, considering one false start in each start up attempt.

4. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Hazard Identification and risk assessment of the activity shall be made available to the operator.
2. Only authorized person is allowed to operate the equipment.
3. All the access to the equipment shall be kept clear.
4. All the persons operating the equipment shall be provided with the proper training.
5. All the guards and coverings of the equipment shall be covered.
6. No flammable material or oil shall be scattered or spilled around the equipment.
7. Field operator should wear the relevant personal protective equipment like boiler suit, safety
shoes, helmet, safety hand gloves, safety goggle and others.
8. Make sure vehicle tyres are arrested and engines are switched off.

9. STARTING PROCEDURE
1. The truck will be first Gross weighted and from Weigh Bridge information will be sent to control
room.
2. The truck will be positioned outside the unloading point and ensure that the individual
compartment of the tanker is sealed.
3. Key number from invoice will be verified and corresponding key (provided by supplier) will be
taken from control room for opening tanker manifold lock.
4. The truck will be parked in flat surface and allowed to settle for 10-15 minutes.
5. Each compartment has to be checked visually.
6. After position the taken in the unloading point truck’s engine will be switched off and key will be
taken under engineer’s custody.
7. Check the above said valves of the pumps are lineup correctly.
8. Inform to switch gear engineer and to control room engineer and start the pump.
9. Observe for direction of rotation, vibration and noise.
10. Switch gear engineer should note down the starting and running current and voltage.
11. Tank level has to be recorded with value by finishing of each compartment in unloading log
sheet.

The purpose of this procedure is for proper understanding about the proper unloading of HFO and
safe operating procedure
