INTRODUCTION

➢ Forensic science is a field that encompasses the application of scientific principles to the investigation of
crimes.

➢ Its role is to collect, analyze and interpret evidence that can be presented in court to support legal
proceedings.

➢ Forensic science has played a crucial role in the criminal justice system for many years.

➢ However, as technology has evolved, so too has the role of forensic science in criminal investigations.

3
TRADITIONAL METHODS OF FORENSIC SCIENCE

➢ Forensic science has traditionally relied on the collection and analysis of physical evidence such as DNA,
fingerprints, fibers, and other trace evidence.

➢ While these methods are still widely used today, they have certain limitations.

➢ For example, DNA analysis can be time-consuming and expensive, and fingerprints can be difficult to
analyze if they are smudged or partial.

4
IMPACT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES ON FORENSIC SCIENCE

➢ The emergence of new technologies has had a significant impact on forensic science, allowing investigators to
analyze evidence more quickly and accurately than ever before. Here are some examples:

➢ DNA analysis advancements: New DNA analysis techniques have been developed that are more sensitive and
can produce results faster than traditional methods. For example, STR (short tandem repeat) and miniSTR
DNA analysis can be used to identify suspects from small or degraded DNA samples. Y-STR analysis can be
used to identify male suspects from mixed DNA samples.

➢ Advancements in fingerprint analysis: Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) have been
developed to analyze and compare fingerprints, making the process faster and more accurate. Chemical
development techniques have also been developed to enhance the quality of fingerprints found at crime scenes.

CON…

➢ Digital forensics: Digital devices are increasingly being used as evidence in criminal investigations.
Digital forensics is the process of retrieving and analyzing data from digital devices such as computers,
smartphones, and cameras. This can include the recovery of deleted files, analysis of internet activity, and
identification of suspects through social media.

➢ Biometrics: Biometric technologies, such as facial recognition and iris scans, can be used to identify
suspects from images captured at crime scenes.

➢ Advancements in ballistics analysis: Integrated Ballistics Identification Systems (IBIS) use computer
algorithms to compare and match bullet and shell casing markings, making the process faster and more
6
accurate.
ADVANTAGES OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN FORENSIC
SCIENCE

➢ Increased accuracy and speed of analysis: New technologies allow forensic scientists to analyze evidence
more quickly and accurately, leading to faster identification of suspects and more successful prosecutions.

➢ Ability to process large amounts of data quickly: Digital forensics allows investigators to process vast
amounts of data quickly, which can be crucial in solving complex cases.

➢ Improved objectivity and reduced human error: Automated analysis techniques reduce the risk of human
error and improve the objectivity of forensic analysis.

➢ Enhanced ability to link evidence to suspects: New technologies can link evidence to suspects with
greater accuracy, making it more difficult for criminals to escape justice. 7
CHALLENGES OF INCORPORATING NEW TECHNOLOGIES
INTO FORENSIC SCIENCE

Incorporating new technologies into forensic science is not without its challenges:

➢ Cost of equipment and training: New technologies can be expensive to acquire and maintain, and training
personnel to use them can be time-consuming and costly.

➢ Need for updated protocols and procedures: New technologies require updated protocols and procedures
to ensure that they are being used effectively and ethically.

➢ Ethical concerns surrounding the use of certain technologies: Some technologies, such as facial
recognition, raise ethical concerns around privacy and civil liberties.

CASE STUDIES SHOWCASING THE IMPACT OF NEW
TECHNOLOGIES ON FORENSIC SCIENCE
There have been many cases in recent years where new technologies have played a crucial role in solving crimes.
Here are some examples:

➢ Golden State Killer: DNA evidence collected from a crime scene led to the identification of the Golden State Killer,
who had evaded capture for over 40 years. Investigators used genetic genealogy, a new technique that involves
comparing DNA samples to public genealogy databases, to identify a suspect.

➢ Boston Marathon bombing: Digital forensics played a key role in identifying the Boston Marathon bombers.
Investigators were able to recover video footage from surveillance cameras and identify the suspects from their
images.

➢ Bali bombings: In the Bali bombings of 2002, investigators used ballistics analysis to link the bullets found at the
9
crime scene to a gun that was later found in the possession of one of the suspects.
CONCLUSION

➢ New technologies have had a significant impact on forensic science, allowing investigators to analyze
evidence more quickly and accurately than ever before.

➢ While there are challenges associated with incorporating new technologies into forensic science, the
benefits are clear.

➢ As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more advancements in forensic science in
the years to come.
