NATIONAL READING AND BOOK MONTH 2023

SPELLING BEE (GRADES 7-8)

GENERAL MECHANICS
1. The elimination round will be held in the respective English classes.

2. For the final round, 16 students will compete in three rounds: easy, average and difficult.
Seven words will be given per category, for a total of 21 words. Three words will be
prepared for the clincher round in case there will be a tie.

3. Three winners will win per level (Grade 7 and 8): 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place.
Medals and certificates will be awarded to the winning students.

Certificates of Participation will also be given to the 16 qualifiers for Grades 7 and 8.

SCHEDULE

 The elimination rounds per section must happen within November 13-15.
 The list of spelling bee qualifiers (from all 16 sections) shall be given on November 20,
Monday at 1pm STE Room.

FINAL ROUND MECHANICS

1. The Quiz Master will read the word to be spelled slowly, clearly and accurately twice. She will
then give its meaning, use it in a sentence and give the word again.

2. Contestants may only start writing their answer when the QM says “Go,” otherwise, their
attention will be called.

3. The allotted time for each word begins after the quiz master is done reading the spelling item
for the last time.

4. The checker will read and verify the contestants’ answers. He/she will also announce the
number assigned per student who spelled the word correctly.

5. The scorer will record the corresponding points of all contestants in the tally sheet.

6. There are four (4) rounds in the competition, namely Easy, Average, Difficult and Clincher. The
Clincher only takes place if there is a tie.

7. The Easy, Average and Difficult rounds have seven (7) items each. In the Clincher round, three
items will be given.

8. Note that the capitalization rules apply in the contest which means that a common noun, that is
spelled with a capital letter or a proper noun that is spelled with a small letter, will be
considered incorrect.

9. Points and time limit per round are as follows:

Easy 1 point 15 seconds

Average 3 points 20 seconds
Difficult 5 points 25 seconds
Clincher 1 point 25 seconds

10. After the 7th item in the Difficult round, the total number of points of each contestant will be
tabulated.

11. The student who gets the highest number of points is automatically declared the Champion. The
Champion should get 35 points or better to be eligible for the gold medal.

12. The organizing committee will be very strict on capitalization.

13. Should there be a tie among the highest pointers getting the highest score, the contest
continues to the Clincher round. The total number of points reverts to zero. The contestant who
gets the most number of correct answers after three items will be declared the winner.

winners.
