This song depicts how the lyrics of the song deal in a satirical way with the
press’ obsession about Taylor Swift’s romantic relationships.She wrote the song
in response to the media’s perception of her as a serial dater who writes songs
 as a way to achieve some sort of “emotional revenge” on her former boyfriends.
She initially found the media’s perception of her romantic life hurtful, but as time
went on, it began to seem hilarious to her and eventually led to the birth of the
song,Blank Space.

First Literary Device: Metaphor

The lyrics “Love’s a game, wanna play?” is used as a metaphor to indicate that she
had taken love to be a game, and that cheating or breaking up would end it.She
wants the guy to 'play this game' meaning to fall in love with each other and see the
outcome of it. The word 'game' can also be taken as a competition that appears
friendly, meaning that they do fall in love together,except that now she feels like it is
just a race to see which of her former boyfriends lasted better when it ended or if the
‘game’ never ended at all. The usage of the metaphor in the song helps the listeners
to explain how ‘love is a game’ as love is not so easy and wonderful as it sounds.

“But I’ve got a blank space baby, And I’ll write your name” is trying to say that Taylor
feels like she has an empty hole or a missing chapter in her life and that she will
‘write his name’ to let him fill it in or become part of it. It conveys the idea of how
lonely she is, and needs someone to fill in that ‘blank space’. This can also be
interpreted as Taylor not giving up and to keep on filling the space with her former
boyfriends until she finds the right person.

Second Literary device: Simile

Simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing
of a different kind. It is used to make a description more empathetic or vivid. The
lyrics “ You look like, my next mistake” conveys how Taylor already knew that the
relationship was not going to be successful as she had already been in similar
relationships,and each one was a disaster after another.But she still had the sense
of hope whether the relationship was going to work out and therefore gave love
another try. It can be compared to a game of dice, she keeps rolling until her luck or
charm strikes out. This is giving a sense of relatability to the listeners as the majority
are struggling to find a stable relationship and that many of them were not
successful.
“I can read you like a magazine” is saying that Taylor had been with guys similar to
the current guy she has in the song, and that she can immediately decipher how he
is just by looking at his appearance or how he behaves. The word “magazine’’ is
significant as it indicates how it is very easy for Taylor to ‘read’ him as most girls are
into magazines about style and fashion.Therefore this describes her nature, which is
a young girl immersed in temporary love that is the type to change boyfriends like
her clothes. This can also be like how people like or choose their significant others
by their appearance or personality.
