Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without

making physical contact with the object. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of
aerial sensor technology to detect and classify objects on Earth (both on the surface, and in the
atmosphere and ocean) by means of propagated signals (e.g. electromagnetic radiation emitted
from aircraft or satellites).
11
There are two main types or remote sensing: passive remote sensing and active remote
sensing. Passive sensors detect natural radiation that is emitted or reflected by the objects or
surrounding area being observed. Reflected sunlight is the most common source of radiation
measured by passive censors. Examples of passive remote sensors include film photography,
infra-red, charge-coupled devices, and radiometers. Active collection, on the other hand, emits
energy in order to scan objects and areas whereupon a sensor then detects and measures the
radiation that is reflected or backscattered from the target. RADAR and LIDAR are examples of
active remote sensing where the time delay between emission and return is measured, stabilizing
the location, height, speed and direction of an object.

22. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Active sensing is better than passive sensing
B. Passive sensing is not as strong as active sensing
C. The energy in sunlight is important for remote sensing
D. The source of energy radiated for sensing determines whether it is the active or passive
type
E. Active remote sensing and passive remote sensing are equally useful for the
development of knowledge and technology

23. Based on the text we can say that .…

A. remote sensing is expensive technology
B. remote sensing is useful for transportation
C. we can apply the technology to study animals
D. medical science can be improved through remote sensing
E. remote sensing make it possible to collect information of an object in a dangerous area

Smartphones and tablets become one of the most important items for most of people. We
use these devices not only for communication, but also for entertainment and gaining knowledge
about the world. These devices are like windows to open the world because they connect to the
internet. However, connecting to the internet through these devices put them on the risk of
infected by viruses. We should install anti – viruses. Let me tell you the reasons.
First, we store very important personal information in our smartphones or tablets such as
internet banking, important personal files or documents, several applications for chatting and
social media. These personal information can be stolen by hackers for malicious purposes. The
anti- virus can limit the hackers’ actions in cheating our personal information.
Second, when we don’t protect our smartphones or tablets, they may be infected the viruses
easily which then we will loose our personal information. If we have anti – virus in our
smartphones, or tablets, it will detect the virus immediately. Then, we can block the virus.
Third, anti- virus can optimize battery life. Battery life is one of the workhorses that we all
share. An anti- virus will allow you to verify, in real time, the consumption your applications are

12
using on your devices. It informs you the space it’s occupying, and lets you stop the application
process to optimize both the battery and performance of your devices.
Based on the above arguments, I really recommend you protected your smartphone or
tablets with anti- virus. It will give you great advantages.

24. The text is about …

A. the review of anti- virus in smartphones and tablets
B. the weakness of anti- virus in smartphones and tablets
C. the important of anti- virus in smartphones and tablets
D. the controversy of anti- virus in smartphones and tablets

25. Which of the following statements is the writer’s argument about installing anti-virus on
smartphones or tablets?
A. The information can be stolen by hackers.
B. Smartphones can be infected by virus.
C. It protects personal information.
D. It causes the losing of data.
E. It decreases battery life.

26. “An anti- virus will allow you to verify, in real time, the consumption your applications.....

The underlined word is the closest meaning with ....
A. receive
B. confirm
C. disprove
D. contadict

Today, biofuels are defined as energy source from renewable, recently produced organic
matter, both plant and animal. The so-called “fossil fuels”, such as coal, oil and natural gas, are
biological in origin because they are formed in the earth from the remains of long-dead organism
(plants and animal). However, they have been lying underground for hundreds of millions of
years and have been converted by natural processes including geological pressure. Once
depleted, they cannot be replaced or replenished. For these reason, they are not considered
biofuels.
The concept of renewability is extremely important because it means that new biofuels can
be found or produced to replace those that have been used up. Some biofuels are not truly
renewable, however. In the mid-1800s, for example, whale oil was widely used for lighting in
homes, and some whale species were hunted almost to extinction for their oil. For this reason,
whale oil, althought it is technically a biofuel, is not a reneweble resource.

Many people like playing video games because of some reasons. However, there are
many violent games, and they can danger the players. That’s why a state censorship can be
justified by the harms caused by violent video games.

Many people say that violent video games can encourage a more violent society. The
constant exposure to horrific acts desensitizes the user to do violence. The extent of the brutality
in today’s games is shocking and people play them for hours a day, meaning they are addicted.

On the other hand, some say that violent games are just entertainment and the government
should not intervene to limit people’s freedom of choice to play them, as they do not harm the
player or anyone else.

In conclusion, both sides have their own reasons. They may be true. However, there are

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

Captain Phillips is an upcoming 2013 American biographical action thriller film directed by Paul
Greengrass based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and
Dangerous days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Tatty, and starring Tom Hanks. It is
produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca. The film tells a biopic of
merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage for several days by Somali
Pirates when the container ship Maersk Alabama which sailed from southern Oman drown along
the coast of Somalia and then to Kenya was hijacked in 2009.

Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a veteran merchant mariner, still lives in his native New
England, and he's a plainspoken family man full of anxiety about the economically bleak new
world his kids are facing. When his wife (Chaterine Keener) drops him off at the airport, we can
see reverse her. The film then cuts to Somalia, a land of dust and poverty, where the pirates are
recruited for their mission as if they were migrant farm workers lining up to be chosen for that
day's labor. Greengrass doesn't have to fill in much about the violent, chaotic breakdown of
Somalia to let us know that these men have little choice.
