Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Amongst the proud students receiving their diplomats at the 2008 graduation ceremony at
Connecticut College in the US was a young woman from Uganda called Beatrice. What makes her
accomplishment so special is that she owes it to a goat. Beatrice was born in 1985 and grew up in the
mountains of Uganda in a village called Kisinga. It is an extremely poor village and Beatrice, the
second of six children, very much wanted to attend school but her family did not have the money to
pay for this. In fact, the family was so poor that there wasn’t enough to eat.
All this changed in 1993 when Beatrice was nine years old and her mother told her that, through the
generosity of an organization called Heifer, they had received a goat. A goat?! At that time, Beatrice
couldn’t see the value of that goat, especially when her mother told her she would be responsible for
caring for the goat. They called the goat Mugisa which means in Beatrice’s language luck. After few
months, Mugisa was pregnant when she came to Beatrice’s family and soon gave birth to two female
kids. The milk from the goats helped Beatrice and her family to get healthy, and they were able to sell
the additional milk. The family was then earning money to send Beatrice to school. One day in 1995,
a study sponsored by Heifer came to visit Kisinga. Laura and Ruth , two ladies who accompanied the
tour, were impressed by Beatrice’s passion for learning. They were inspired by her story and decided
to write a children’s book about her. They called it Beatrice’s Goat. In 2001, Beatrice’s Goat was
published and became a popular New York Times best seller. Laura and Ruth helped Beatrice obtain
a full scholarship to attend a private school in Massachusetts.
