Activity 4-

Problem Solving Activity

Directions: Analyze the given problems, and solve for the given problems. Show your complete solutions
on your notebook.
Empirical and Molecular Formulas
1. Isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, is composed of 59.96% C, 13.42% H,
and 26.62% O. What is the molecular formula of the alcohol if the molecular weight is
60g/mol?
2. What is the molecular formula of a compound that is 81.2% boron and 18.8% hydrogen and
has a molar mass of 53.2 g/mol? This compound is one of a series of boron hydrides, many
of which are unstable and highly reactive, decomposing violently in the presence of air and
moisture. Some are used as rocket propellants.
3. Naphthalene, a common insect repellant, has a molecular weight of 130 g/mol. Analysis
shows that it contains 93.275% C and 6.25% H. What are its empirical and molecular
formulas?
4. An alcohol contains 64.81% C, 13.60% H and 21.59% O. The molecular mass of this compound
is 74 g/mole. Determine its molecular and empirical formula?
5. Eugenol, a chemical substance with the flavor of cloves, consists of 73.19% C, 19.49% O, and
7.37% H. What is its molecular an empirical formula?

Activity 5:
Problem Solving-Balancing Chemical Equation
A. Directions: Balance each chemical equation. Classify each reaction as combination, decomposition,
single replacement, or double replacement. Do this on your activity notebook.
1. Fe2S3 → Fe +S
2. BaCl2(aq) + K2SO4(aq) → BaSO4(s) + KCl(aq)
3. AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)
4. Fe + O2 → Fe2O3
5. CuO + HCl → CuCl2 + H2O
6. Mg + AgNO3 → Mg(NO3)2 + Ag
7. Al + Br2 → AlBr3
8. CuCO3 → CuO + CO2
9. Pb(NO3)2(aq) + NaCl(aq) → PbCl2(s) + NaNO3(aq)
10. CuCl2 + Na2S → CuS + NaCl
