Introduction
The information in this section can guide you in
making your own simple bath and beauty products. It
presents guidelines, techniques, and recipes.

Not every recipe will be right for you. It is best to

consider these recipes more as guidelines than
absolutes; the specific ingredients are mere
suggestions to help you get started. Recipes should be
modified to fit your own skin and individual tastes.

 Individual ingredients may have different ef-

fects on you than on other people
 Synergy is possible when combining ingredi-
ents
 Notice your responses to individual ingredi-
ents, both emotional and physical
 Trust your senses: if you don’t like it, it’s wrong
for you
 As in other areas of endeavour, perseverance
offers amazing rewards
To purchase ingredients needed for these recipes look
in your local health food store or order online through
Essentially Natural.

Glossary of Ingredients

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar promotes blood

circulation in the small capillaries that
irrigate the skin. It is also an antiseptic
and helps prevent the proliferation of
bacteria, viruses, or yeast that trigger
infection. It is able dissolve excessive
fatty deposits at the surface of the skin
and reduce scaly or peeling conditions.
Apple Cider Vinegar also regulates the
pH of the skin.

.
Baking Soda - Bicarbonate of Soda
Baking soda and bicarbonate of soda are different
names for the same thing. It is one of the most
versatile substances around and is well known as a
natural and safe household cleaner. Unlike household
cleaners which contain harsh chemicals, baking soda
is mild (pH of 8.1) and harmless to your family and
any pets.

Baking soda is a staple in many homes and offers a

natural alternative to the array of toxins in household
cleaning products. Conventional cleansers expose us
to multiple chemicals (usually in the form sodium
laurel sulphate, and parabens) linked to asthma,
cancer and other documented health problems.

Apart from using to clean virtually every room in your

home, you can use Baking Soda to:
 treat sunburn and insect bites
 make a natural deodorant
 removing splinters from your fingers
 whiten your teeth
 neutralise acidic odours (like those in your
fridge)
Baking Soda is available from most supermarkets.
.
Beeswax

Beeswax is rich in a variety of vitamins such as Vita-

min E, which is rich in anti-oxidants, the powerful
bodies that fight against harmful oxides and free radi-
cals that cause aging and non-repairable cell damage.
Beeswax also contains large quantities of Vitamin A, a
substance crucial to cell development and repair.
Beeswax is a highly sought after emulsifier and hu-
mectant for cosmetic uses as it has an irritation poten-
tial of zero; making it a natural hydrating agent that
can penetrate through the skins surface without clog-
ging pores.

Bentonite

Bentonite is a healing clay formed from volcanic ash

that is rich in natural calcium, silica, sodium, iron and
potassium. It helps bind toxins making them more
soluble so they can be washed away from the surface
of your skin. Considered to be one of most powerful
natural facials, it is extremely effective for Deep Pore
Cleansing & Soothing Skin.
Bergamot Essential Oil

This is one of those must have in the medicine cabinet

essential oils because it’s antibacterial, antiseptic,
anti-infectious and anti-parasitic properties make it a
great germ killer. It’s also an analgesic, an antidepres-
sant, and a mild sedative.
Apart from its general feel-good properties, Bergamot
oil can be used in the treatment of:
 depression
 infection (all types including skin)
 wounds
 cold sores
 stress
 tension
 fear
 skin disorders such as, psoriasis and eczema
 stimulates liver, stomach and spleen

Precautions:
Not recommended for direct use on children less than
5 years of age. Minor skin irritation may occur (dilu-
tion is recommended). Avoid direct sunlight or ultravi-
olet light for up to 72 hours after use.
Borax

Borax is a 100% natural product but isn't necessarily

100% safe and sensible precautions need to be taken
when using. (See below) It is found in many common
household and commercial products. In the old days it
was used to coat dry-cured meats such as hams to pro-
tect them from becoming fly-blown during storage.
Uses for Borax include;
 anti-fungal foot soak
 buffering agent to control the pH in swimming
pools
 fungicide (mould killer)
 herbicide
 insect killer
 laundry booster
 preserving flowers
There are many advantages to using borax to as a nat-
ural cleaning product because although it is toxic if
you swallow it, borax does not emit chemicals or dan-
gerous fumes like bleach does. Borax, a white mineral
powder, has a pH level of about 9 and a low toxicity.
Borax is commonly used as a deodorizer as well as for
cleaning toilets and drains. It is also used as an insec-
ticide, herbicide and fungicide and it can be mixed
with water in a solution to kill and remove mould as it
is a natural mould inhibitor. You can buy borax in su-
permarkets where you will usually find it in the laun-
dry section.
Warnings
Keep out of the reach of children & pets. Over expo-
sure to borax dust can cause respiratory and skin irri-
tation.
Borax is available from most supermarkets and can
also be purchased online from Essential Natural.

Castile Soap

Castile Soap is a “green” cleaning product that offers

a real ecological solution. It is 100 % biodegradable,
free of synthetic preservatives and is based on renew-
able resources. Castile Soap causes absolutely no
harm to the environment and no harm you or your
family’s health.
It is an absolute essential in an organically clean home
and in natural home cleaning solutions.
Castile Soap can be difficult to find in South Africa,
but it can be purchased online from Essential Natural.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil can be used as a natural skin moisturiser,
helping with dry skin and it also reduces protein loss
when used in hair.
Coconut oil is an important base ingredient for the
manufacture of soap. It is more soluble in hard water
and salt water than other soaps allowing it to lather
more easily.
A basic coconut oil soap is clear when melted and a
bright white when hardened.

Cocoa Butter

The moisturising properties of cocoa butter help in the

prevention of stretch marks as well as in the treatment
of chapped or burned skin and lips.
Use daily as moisturiser to help prevent dry, itchy
skin. It soaks into the skin and has very high concen-
trations of vitamins and emollients that the skin needs
to stay healthy, soft and supple.
That's why it's such a popular ingredient in 'make your
own' recipes for the face and skin, such as soaps and
lotions.
