This summer I read an enormously popular book “To kill a mockingbird”by Harper

Lee. The novel was praised for its sensitive treatment of a child’s awakening
to racism and prejudice in the American South. To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on
that gut instinct of right and wrong, and distinguishes it from just following the
law.

The book takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during
the Great Depression. The protagonist is Jean Louise Finch, a girl who ages from
six to nine years old during the course of the novel. She is raised with her brother,
Jeremy by their widowed father,a lower Atticus Finch. He tells them that it is “a
sin to kill a mockingbird,” alluding to the fact that the birds are innocent and
harmless.

When Tom Robinson, one of the town’s Black residents, is falsely accused
of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman, Atticus agrees to defend him despite
threats from the community.

The children, meanwhile, play out their own drama

of prejudice and superstition as they become interested in Arthur Radley, a
neighbour who is a local legend. Boo makes his presence felt indirectly through a
series of benevolent acts, finally appeared when Bob Ewell attacks Jeremy and
Jean. Boo kills Ewell, but the sheriff, believes it is better to say that Ewell’s death
occurred when he fell on his own knife. Jean agrees, noting that to do otherwise
would be “sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird.”

I for one know that To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that really has changed my
life and that every time I go back over it, I find something new that I assimilate
into my own code of ethics.I would really advise picking up a copy of Harper Lee's
magnificent novel and giving it a try. Because whatever happens, it will never stop
being a good book, and it will never stop inspiring good people.

Let it not be forgotten that a true piece of literature, like To Kill a Mockingbird, is
meaningful in every period and that today, Atticus Finch's message should be heard in
the midst of all the global conflicts that we hear of on the news every night.
