Y1 Comp 9 Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs have a long snout (nose) for digging under hedges and
plants for food.
They have a short tail and five toes on each foot. They have strong
claws for digging. They have large eyes and ears.
The hair on the back of a hedgehog makes sharp, stiff spines. When
hedgehogs roll up into a ball to protect themselves, their spines stick
up. They scare away animals like foxes.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal. They sleep during the day and are awake at
night.
Hedgehogs are omnivores. They eat other animals and plants with
their sharp teeth. Insects, small mice, snails, lizards, frogs, worms,
seeds, fruit and birds’ eggs are food for hedgehogs.
They live in burrows, nests made from leaves and grass, or hollow
logs. Hedgehogs live by themselves unless they are making babies.
Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets. When they are born, they are blind
and have no hair.
