Group Activity – Differentiated Instruction
1. Using the following materials such as small jar, soil and water, ask
a pupil to make muddy water mixture.
2. Let the pupils describe the mixture.
3. Ask pupils if they can separate the components of the mixture to
make the water clearer.
4. Let pupils discover that the process filtration can separate impurities
from water by conducting a simple activity.
5. Ask pupils to present their materials for the group activity.
6. Present the Rubric to be used in assessing the conduct of the group
activity.

Rubric in Assessing Group Performance in

Simple Science Activity (Self-Assessment)

Direction: Assess your group performance in accomplishing the task

provided. Encircle the corresponding rating.
Description Ratings

5 4 3 2 1

1. All members take part in the group

activities.

2. Members agree and supports with each

other.

3. Group members keep on the assigned task.

4. Group members practice collaborative

skills.

5. Group members perform well as a whole.

1 = Major Difficulty
2 = Requires Improvement
3 = Good
4 = Very Good
5 = Exemplary
6. Presentation of the Activity Sheet for the Science simple
activity on filtration.

LET’S DO IT. The learners will be asked to construct a filter model.

ACTIVITY SHEET

Science Activity: Filtration Technique on Separating Mixtures

Objective: To describe how filtration technique separates
components in a mixture.
Materials: materials for filtration set-up: plastic bottle, charcoal,
paper filter, pebbles, stone, sand, piece of cloth, rubber
band
Procedures:
A. Preparation of materials.
B. Setting up of simple filtration device.
1. Cut the plastic bottle into two.
2. On the mouth of the top part of the bottle, put the filter paper
and piece of cloth and tighten it up using rubber band.
3. Put the top part of the bottle reversely on the bottom part of the
bottle.
4. Put the following materials inside the top part of the bottle
respectively: sand, charcoal, pebbles, and stone.
5. Separate the water impurities of the muddy water mixture
through the use of the set up
6. Record your observation using the activity sheet.

Observations:

1. Describe the appearance of muddy water mixture before it was

filtered.
2. Describe the appearance of the mixture after it was filtered.
3. Did the technique help to separate water impurities from the
mixture? How?
E. Continuation of the LET’S SHOW IT. Group Presentation/ Reporting on how the pupils
discussion of new used the technique in separating the components of mixture.
concepts
F. Developing mastery LET’S WIDEN IT UP. The teacher will further discuss the
(leads to Formative background information through inquiry approach.
Assessment 3) • A mixture of liquid and tiny particles of solid which have not
been dissolved can be separated through filtration.
• A filter paper is used to separate the suspended particles from
the liquid. It has tiny pores that allow the liquid part of the
mixture to pass through it.
• The solid particles that are left behind are called residue, while
the liquid that passes through the filter paper is called filtrate.
G. Finding practical LET’S LIVE TOGETHER. Show a picture of a water refilling
applications of station. Ask pupil how filtration technique helps to make water
concepts and skills in becomes safer to drink.
daily living

H. Making LET’S USE IT. Ask pupils to give the benefits of using filtration
generalizations and technique in separating components of mixtures.
abstractions about the
lesson
I. Evaluating learning LET’S MEASURE. On your notebook, answer the following. Write
FILTER if the statement is correct and RESIDUE if not.
1. Filtration technique is used to separate solid and other impurities
from liquid.
2. In a filtration technique, the solid components remain in the set-up
as the liquid is being filtered.
3. Unwanted components in water such as impurities can be separated
using hand picking or manual separation technique.
4. Water refilling stations use filtration technique to produce bottled
mineral water.
5. Nowadays, it is still safe to drink water directly from deep well
(poso) or from a well (talaga).
J. Additional activities LET’S EXTEND IT. Give at least 3 examples of mixture where
for application or filtration can be used to separate the components.
