ZION SALTIBUS - Support, Movement and Locomotion
3. What are the two main parts of the human skeleton? Describe each part.
Axial Skeleton:This part includes the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage.
The skull protects the brain, the vertebral column supports the body and protects the spinal
cord, and the rib cage protects the organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and lungs. -
Appendicular Skeleton: This part includes the limbs and the girdles that attach them to the axial
skeleton. The limbs include the arms and hands (upper limbs) and the legs and feet (lower
limbs). The girdles are the shoulder girdle (which attaches the upper limbs to the axial skeleton)
and the pelvic girdle (which attaches the lower limbs to the axial skeleton).
Support: The skeleton provides structural support for the body, maintaining its shape and
preventing it from collapsing.
Protection: The bones of the skull protect the brain, while the rib cage protects the heart and
lungs. The vertebral column protects the spinal cord.
Movement*Bones, along with joints and muscles, work together to allow for movement.
Muscles contract and pull on bones, causing movement at joints.
Mineral Storage:Bones act as a reservoir for minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus.
These minerals are essential for various physiological functions and are released into the
bloodstream when needed.
