# Time - To- Learn
II. What You Need To Know

Our discussion will be divided into two parts:

1. Adding 2-3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 without
regrouping.
2. Adding 2-3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 with
regrouping.

First Part: Without Regrouping # Time - To- Think

Let us start by studying the problem

below.

Mother asked Ben and Berto to pick mangoes and sell it to the
market so that they can buy rice. The two boys immediately
followed their mother’s command. Ben picked 71 mangoes
while Berto picked 327 mangoes. How many mangoes did
Ben and Berto pick in all ?
If you were Ben or Berto, will you follow the command of your
mother ? Why? Why not?

Let us first understand the problem above:

1. Who asked Ben and Berto to pick mangoes?
2. What did mother asked Ben and Berto to do?

6
3. Why did mother asked them to pick mangoes?

4. If you were Ben or Berto, will you follow your mother’s command?
Why? Why not?
• It is but proper that we will abide or follow our parents’
command or request to show our respect and love to them.

Now, let us solve the problem.

1. What is asked in the problem?
* How many mangoes did Ben and Berto pick in all ?
2. What are the given numbers? *327 and 71

3. Let us add the numbers of mangoes picked by Ben and

Berto:

3.1 First, let us add the numbers in the ones place.

327
If we add 7 and 1, what is the answer? 8
+71
8

3.2 Second, let us add the numbers in the tens place.

Add 2 and 7 ( the answer is 9 ).
327
+ 71
98
3.3 Third, let us add the numbers in the hundreds place.
If we add 3 and none (0), the answer
remains 3 . 327
7
+ 71
398
Answer to the problem: The total number of mangoes picked by Ben
and Berto is 398.

Let us study another set of numbers. First, add the numbers in the
ones place. Second, the numbers in the tens place. And third, the numbers
in the hundreds place.
Example:
542 First: 2+6=8
+ 256Second: 4 + 5 = 9
798 Third: 5+2=7

Second Part: With Regrouping

Now, let us study on how to add numbers if there are regroupings
that will happen in any place.

1. If regrouping of numbers will happen in the ones place.

Example: 1
346
+ 37
383
First, we will add 6 and 7, and the answer is 13. Since 13
is a two-digit number, then write 3 in the ones place and regroup 1
in the tens place. Next, add all the numbers in the tens place. And lastly,
add all the numbers in the hundreds place.

2. If regrouping of numbers will happen in the tens place.

Example: 1

8
First: 3+4=7
Second: 7 + 5 = 12 ( write 2 in the tens place and
regroup 1 in the hundreds place) Third: 1+4+1=6

1. If regrouping of numbers will happen in the hundreds place.

Example: 1
900
+ 100
1000

First: 0 + 0 = 0 ( ones place )

Second: 0 + 0 = 0 (tens place)
Third: 9 + 1 = 10 (write 0 in the hundreds place while
regroup 1 on the thousands place )

# Let Us Remember

What are the things we need to remember in adding 2-3 digit

numbers by 3-digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 without or with
regrouping?

1. First, add all the numbers in the ones place. Second, add the
numbers in the tens place. And third, add the numbers in the
hundreds place.

Example:
245 First : 5+2=7
+ 312Second: 4 + 1 = 5
557 Third : 2 +3=5
9
2. If the sum of the numbers in the ones place is 10 or more, the first
digit will be written in the ones place and the
second digit will be regrouped to the tens place.

Example: 1 First: 6 + 7 = 13
516 Second : 1 + 1 + 5 = 7
+ 157 Third : 5+1=6
673

3. If the sum of the numbers in the tens place is 10 or more, the first
digit will be written in the tens place and the second digit will be
regrouped to the hundreds place.

Example : 1
374 First : 4+3=7
+ 583 Second: 7 + 8 = 15
957 Third : 1 + 3 + 5 = 9

4. If the sum of the numbers in the hundreds place is 10 or more, the

first digit will be written in the hundreds place and the second digit
will be regrouped to the thousands place.

Example: 1 First : 0 + 0 = 0
900 Second: 0 + 0 = 0
+ 100 Third : 9 + 1 = 10
1 000 Fourth: 1 +__ +__ =1

PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
A. Add the group of pictures in the box. Do this in your notebook.

1. + = _________

12
2. + = _______

3. + = + = _____

4. + = + = ____

B. Add the following, write the correct answer in your

notebook.

1.) 65 + 0 = _____ 3.) 18 + _____ = 18

2.) _____ + 0 = 43 4.) 537 + 0 = _____

C. Change the order of addends then find the sum.

1.) 325 + 53 = _____ + _____ 3.) 6 + 5 = _____ + _____

2.) 42 + 78 = _____ + _____ 4.) 58 + 112 = _____ + _____

13
D. Add the following numbers.

1.) (8 + 6) + 5 = 8 + (6 + 5) 2.) (7 + 3) + 9 = 7 + (3 + 9)
_____ + 5 = 8 + _____ _____ + 9 = 7 + _____
______ = ______ _____ = _____

II. What You Need To Know

• What happens when zero is added to a number?

• What will happen if we change the order of addends?

• What happens to the sum when we change the grouping of

addends?

DISCUSSION:

First Discussion:

Direction: Look at the pictures and answer the

following questions below.

+ = _______

How many pots of gabi-gabi are there in the first box? 4

How many pots of gabi-gabi are there in the second box? zero
Let’s write it like this. 4 + 0 = ____

14
What is the correct answer if we add 4+0 4 How can we
show concern for plants and to our environment?
(by watering, cultivating and putting fertilizer, Let us keep our
environment clean)

The illustration shows Zero/Identity Property

of addition. Any number added to zero gets the
same number as the sum.
Example:
8+0=8 0 + 23 = 23 235 + 0 = 235
0+4=4 76 + 0 = 76 0 + 132 = 132

Second Discussion

Direction: Look at the pictures of children below.

How many girls watered the plants? 2 How many

boys are playing with sand?
How many children are there in all? 3
Let the pupils use counters to illustrate the number sentence 1 + 2 =
3
Let’s re-arrange the addends
2+1=3
15
Let’s analyze 2 + 1 = 3, 1 + 2 = 3
Do the equations have the same answer?

The illustration shows Commutative Property of

addition. Even we ch ange or re -arrange the
position of addends the equation have the same
answer.
Example:
4 + 8 =12 30 + 45 =75 120 +200 = 320
8 + 4 =12 45 + 30 =75 200 +120 = 320

Third Discussion

Direction: Study the group of pictures below.

6 8 5
What is the number sentence or addition sentence of the group of plants
above?
6 + 8 + 5 what is the sum? 6 + 8 + 5 = 19 Can you add
easily the three addends at the same time?
Which addends will be added first?
16
Group the addends to be added first by using parenthesis, We arrive at two
possibilities:

 (6 + 8) + 5
 6 + (8 + 5) Add
the group of addends:
First, (6 + 8) + 5 second, 6 + (8 + 5)
14 + 5 6 + 13
= 19 = 19
What do you notice about the sum? do not change
Are they equal? Yes
Does the grouping of addends change the sum? No

The illustration shows Associative Property of

addition. The grouping of addends does not
change the sum.
Example:
8 + (5 + 4) = (8 + 5) +4 2 + (6 + 3) = (2 + 6)
+3
8 + 9 = 13 + 4 2 + 9 = 8 +3
17 = 17 11 = 11
