837 - 1 DESCRIPTION - EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR

The e x t e r n a l rearview mirror i s a v a i l a b l e i n two configurations and used by

t h e p i l o t t o supervise t h e l i f t i n g , t r a n s p o r t , and lowering of cargo hook
loads .
Configuration I ( f i g . 837-1):
The e x t e r n a l rearview mirror i s c e n t r a l l y mounted by two brackets t o t h e
h o r i z o n t a l s p a r s below t h e l e f t hand windshield on t h e c o p i l o t f s s i d e .

Configuration I1 ( f i g . 837-2):
The e x t e r n a l rearview mirror i s i n s t a l l e d by a clamp t o t h e forward t i p of
t h e r i g h t s k i d tube.

WARNING THE EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR MUST BE COVERED DURING

NIGHT FLYING T0 AVOID DAZZLING THE PILOT.

837 - 3 INSPECTION FOR CONDITION - EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR

1. Inspect e x t e r n a l rearview mirror f o r contamination, b l i n d s p o t s and

cracks .

a. Clean d i r t y mirror using s u i t a b l e c l o t h .

b. Replace mirror i f broken o r has b l i n d s p o t s .

2 . Inspect mirror mounting components f o r corrosion and damaged s u r f a c e
protection.

a. Remove corrosion with 400 g r i t a b r a s i v e c l o t h .

b. I f necessary, touch up s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n with single-layer lacquer

(CM 407).

3. Inspect mirror mounting components f o r s e c u r i t y , deformation and cracks.

a. Inspect quick r e l e a s e pins (1) f o r condition and operation; r e p l a c e

damaged p i n s .
b. Inspect b r a c k e t s (2 and 3) f o r s e c u r i t y , deformation and cracks. Check
holes f o r wear. Replace brackets i f deformed o r cracked, o r i f holes
a r e worn.
C. Inspect s p h e r i c a l bearings ( 7 and 8) f o r play, r e s t r a i n e d movement and
corrosion; r e p l a c e a s necessary.
d. Inspect s t r u t ( 4 ) f o r deformation. Align o r replace s t r u t a s follows:
1) Remove s t r u t ( 4 ) and Y-strut (5) with attached mirror ( 9 ) from
brackets (2 and 3) .
2) Remove s t a k e d l i p of bushing ( 1 4 ) on Y-strut (5) with m i l l i n g
c u t t e r and p r e s s out bushing t o r e l e a s e s t r u t .

3) Realign s t r u t and Y-strut o r r e p l a c e s t r u t .

4) If necessary, i n s t a l l s p h e r i c a l bearings ( 7 and 8 ) i n s t r u t ( r e f e r
t o Chapter 0 2 ) .
5) Cool bushing (15) t o approx. -50 O C and i n s t a l l i n s p h e r i c a l
bearing ( 7 ) .

6) I n s e r t s t r u t end without bushing between attachrnent l u g s of

Y-strut (5) and a l i g n s t r u t holes. Cool bushing ( 1 4 ) t o approx.
-50 'C and i n s e r t c e n t r a l l y i n a l i g n e d holes. Stake protruding
ends evenly.

e. I f previosly removed, a t t a c h m i r r o r t o Y-strut handtight with clamp

(12); f i t s t r u t ( 4 ) and Y-strut (5) i n b r a c k e t s and secure with t h r e e
quick r e l e a s e p i n s . For mirror a d j u s t i n g procedure, r e f e r t o Para
837-6.

Configuration I1 ( f i g . 837-2) :

I f necessary, t i g h t e n screws ( 4 and 6) o r r e p l a c e deformed o r cracked

rnounting s t r u t ( 3 ) . Refer t o para 837-6 f o r mirror a d j u s t i n g procedure.

837 - 4 REMOVAL - EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR

Configuraton I ( f i g . 837-1) :
1. Remove t h e two quick r e l e a s e pins (1) from bracket (3) .
.
2. Remove quick r e l e a s e p i n (1) from bracket (2) Detach mirror mounting
s t r u t (4, 5 ) .
Configuration I1 ( f i g . 837-2) :
1. Remove screw (6) from clamp (5) and loosen screw ( 4 ) .

2. S l i d e mirror o f f s k i d tube (8) .

837 - 5 INSTALLATION - EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR

Configuration I ( f i g . 837-1) :
1. F i t end of s t r u t ( 4 ) with i n s t a l l e d s p h e r i c a l bearing (7) i n bracket (2)
and secure with quick r e l e a s e pin ( 1 ) .
2 . F i t f r e e ends of Y-strut ( 5 ) i n bracket (3) and secure with two quick
r e l e a s e pins ( 1 ) .
Configuration I1 ( f i g . 837-2) :

1. Loosen screw ( 4 ) on clamp ( 5 ) and s l i d e mirror with attached mounting

s t r u t and clamp onto f r o n t end of r i g h t s k i d t u b e u n t i l abuts t h e
p r o t e c t i v e s k i d shoe ( 7 ) .
2 . Turn t h e clamp on t h e s k i d tube u n t i l t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e holes a l i g n , t h e n
i n s t a l l screw ( 6 ) .
3. Tighten screw ( 4 ) .

837 - 6 ADJUSTMENT - EXTERNAL REARVIEW MIRROR

1. If previously removed, install cargo hook (refer to Chapter 822).

2. Jack helicopter so that cargo hook is suspended above the ground.

3. Align mirror so that the pilot has a comfortable, unobstructed view of the
cargo 'hook:
In both configurations, the mirror can be rotated up and down and from
side to side at the clamp and screw respectively, on the back of the
mirror. Torque-tighten screw according to figs. 837-1 and 837-2.
4. Verify correct alignment of mirror before lowering the helicopter.
