845 -1 DESCRIPTION - CHIP WARNING INDICATION

1. General

The chip warning i n d i c a t i o n warns t h e p i l o t of excessive chip


contamination i n t h e transmission sump by switching on a warning l i g h t .

Configuration.
The system mainly c o n s i s t s of an e l e c t r i c a l l y operated chip d e t e c t o r 5EV
connected by an e l e c t r i c cable t o a warning l i g h t 4EV located on t h e
instrument panel 2VE.

3. Operation.

The chip warning i n d i c a t i o n i s provided dc v o l t a g e by t h e main bus PP21


through p r o t e c t i v e f u s e 8E. Meta1 chips and p a r t i c l e s i n s p l i n t e r and
granular form c i r c u l a t i n g with t h e o i l a r e a t t r a c t e d by t h e chip d e t e c t o r
along with t h e normal wear d e b r i s .
This m a t e r i a l b u i l d s up u n t i l it b r i d g e s t h e c o n t a c t gap on t h e d e t e c t o r
magnet. When t h e gap i s bridged warning l i g h t 4EV i s connected t o ground
and l i g h t s up.

General
- Troubleshoot t h e c i r c u i t using a p p l i c a b l e w i r i n g diagram i n Wiring Diagram
Manual (WDM) .
- Connect e x t e r n a l power supply (EPU) .
- Inspect fuse 8E f o r proper function.
- Test t h e lamp of warning l i g h t 4EV v i a t e s t switch 6EB.

845 -4 Removal - chip d e t e c t o r


1. Before proceeding with removal, remove f u s e 8E, remove b a t t e r y power and,
i f engaged, disconnect e x t e r n a l power supply.

2. Open r e a r clamshell doors and remove access cover from cargo compartment
p a n e l l i n g beneath main transmission.

3. Disconnect plug 5EVa from chip d e t e c t o r and i n s t a l l p r o t e c t i v e cap on


plug.
4 . Press i n chip d e t e c t o r by hand, t u r n counterclockwise, and remove from
s e l f - c l o s i n g valve (5, f i g . 845-2).
845 - 5 Inspectionandcleaning- chipdetector
1. Remove chip d e t e c t o r i n accordance with Para 845-4.

2. Inspect chip d e t e c t o r f o r i n d i c a t i o n of metal p a r t i c l e s . Analyse metal


p a r t i c l e s i n accordance with f i g . 1 1 - 1 4 , and perform c o r r e c t i v e a c t i o n
required by t a b l e 11-2.
3. Clean chip d e t e c t o r with dry cleaning s o l v e n t (CM 202).

4 . Inspect chip d e t e c t o r f o r damage and t e s t magnetism. Replace d e f e c t i v e


chip d e t e c t o r .
5. Connect plug 5EVa t o chip d e t e c t o r . I n s e r t f u s e 8E and apply b a t t e r y
power.
6. Bridge contact gap on chip d e t e c t o r . Warning l i g h t T PLUG must i l l u m i n a t e .
7. Disconnect plug 5EVa. Remove b a t t e r y power and fuse 8E.

8 . I n s t a l l chip d e t e c t o r i n accordance with Para 845-6.


9. Test lamp of warning l i g h t 4EV with test switch 6EB.

845 - 6 Installation - chip detector


1. Use new O-rings when i n s t a l l i n g t h e c h i p d e t e c t o r .

2. I n s e r t chip d e t e c t o r i n s e l f - c l o s i n g valve and t u r n clockwise u n t i l it


locks i n t o place.
3. Reconnect plug 5EVa and i n s t a l l lockwire.

4 . I n s t a l l access cover on cargo compartment panelling.

5. I n s t a l l f u s e 8E.

6. Connect b a t t e r y power.

7 . Test lamp of warning l i g h t 4EV with t e s t switch 6EB.
