ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE

R ADHA GAIK WAD

ROLL NO.- 09
o Organic architecture is a philosophy of architecture which promotes harmony between human habitation and the
natural world. This is achieved through design approaches that aim to be sympathetic and well-integrated with a site,
so buildings, furnishings, and surroundings become part of a unified, interrelated composition.

ARCHITECT’S PHILOSOPHY
o The Heartherwick studio motivation is to design soulful and
interesting places which embrace and celebrate the complexities of
the real world. The approach driving everything is to lead from human
experience rather than any fixed design dogma.
o Heatherwick Studio has won more than 100 international awards for
design excellence, including the Prix Versailles and the RIBA National
Awards.
o Learning hub building philosophy-
This building is meant to revolutionise teaching and learning.
Rather than the traditional rectangular model of hierarchical
Thomas Heatherwick,
classrooms arranged alongside a corridor, Heatherwick have
founder
created a fluid space to support new teaching and learning
philosophies that focus on interactivity, social exchange, small
groups and active learning.
CONCEPT AND FORM
o Form of building Resembling a cluster of elongated bee
hives
o "Before, the university was the place you would come to
because it had the computers, or the university was the
place that you would come to because it had the books,"
said Heatherwick, explaining the concept of the building in
a keynote speech at World Architecture Festival in
Singapore last year. "And now, you can just stay in your
bedroom with your [iPhone] and get your PhD and deal
with the different professors - and so what is the purpose
of a university building anymore?“
o The Learning Hub is a collection of handmade concrete
towers surrounding a central space that brings everyone
together, interspersed with nooks, balconies and gardens
for informal collaborative learning.

FLOOR PLANS
o The hub, consists of 56 tutorial rooms atrium
inside interlinked towers which surround
an atrium.
o There are barely any straight lines in the
whole building, making it feel far more like
something that has developed naturally
than a man-made building.
o The building is naturally ventilated and
designed to enhance learning by creating
an open, comfortable, collaborative space
SECTION
o The rooms in turn open onto the shared
circulation space around the atrium,
interspersed with open spaces and informal
garden terraces, allowing students to be
visually connected while also leaving space to
linger, gather and pause.
o Twelve towers, each a stack of rounded tutorial
rooms, taper inwards at their base around a
generous public central atrium to provide fifty-
six tutorial rooms without corners or obvious
fronts or backs
ELEMENTS IN BUILDING
o Every room brings light in from outside at the
same time as facing onto a naturally ventilated
central atrium which allows students to be
visually connected to each other.

firm worked in collaboration with Sara Faneli

MY VIEWPOINTS
ON BUIDING
Following are features that I like about
the building:
o The curvaceous, organic form stands
out against its rectilinear neighbours.
Building surroundings
o Instead of Typical linear rigid form
the building is more human scale,
which can easily connect to people .
o The studio designed corridor-less
building, making spaces to
collaborate , interact and bring
people together.
o The central atrium brings natural
light and ventilation which makes is
shared circulation space around the
energy efficient. atrium
