I. Description of the Project
Structure Design is the art of creating functional, attractive and economical structure. The
beneficiary of the project desires to have an apartment that can utilize and maximize the lot. The
team came up with the idea of having a 3-storey building apartment. Situated in a 2052 square
meters of land 2 kilometers from marilao exit at North Luzon expressway. The building has 6
units in it, 2-units for every storey and has its own common stairs. Each studio type unit has its
own toilet and bath. Fire walls are built at the back and at side of the Structure to ensure the
safety of the tenants. Adapting to the metro manila designs, the building can last a lifetime. The
basic style of the building makes the structure keep up with the designs of the future.

II. Members of the Group

UCCM Construction is a vibrant collective of four ambitious Civil Engineering students


from Mapua University. Fueled by a passion for innovation, the team is currently meticulously
formulating a plan for a project that hopes to redefine industry standards. Drawing upon their
collective expertise, UCCM Construction aims to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge ideas into
their designs, ensuring a harmonious blend of creativity and practicality. With an unwavering
commitment to excellence, the team is eager to leave an indelible mark on the construction
industry, showcasing the power of youthful ingenuity and academic prowess.

III. Beneficiary Profile

Mr. Marcelino Juan, the group's chosen beneficiary, is a forward-thinking individual with
a vision for personal and community prosperity. Mr. Juan sees an opportunity in his 2,052 square
meter vacant lot in Barangay Prenza, Marilao, Bulacan. He aims to erect a 6-unit, 3-storey
apartment building, leveraging the rising demand for housing in the area. He is driven by the
prospect of creating a comfortable dwelling space and recognizes real estate's lucrative potential
as an additional income source. His decision is strategically anchored in the accessibility of the
location to key places in Marilao, making it a prime spot for residents. His profile embodies an
entrepreneurial spirit, seeking to positively impact his life and contribute to the community's
growing needs.

D. Needs of the Beneficiary


The beneficiary envisions a 3-storey apartment building that precisely meets their
requirements. One of their primary requirements is the desire for two identical studio-type units
on each floor. This architectural consistency not only simplifies construction but also ensures
that each unit is spacious and thoughtfully designed, providing future occupants with a
comfortable living space.
In terms of the roofing system, the beneficiary has chosen a flat slab design. This choice
aligns with their goals for the project, aiming for an economically efficient yet contemporary
aesthetic. The flat slab not only simplifies construction but also opens up possibilities for rooftop
amenities or green spaces, enhancing the overall value of the building.
The selection of jalousie-type windows showcases the beneficiary's focus on practicality
and well-being. These windows offer excellent natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to flow
through the units while providing ample natural light, which can contribute to a more sustainable
and energy-efficient design. Moreover, jalousie windows often feature adjustable slats, giving
tenants control over their environment and privacy.
One distinctive aspect of the beneficiary's vision is the placement of the stairs. They
specifically request that the staircase be situated on the left view of the building. This preference
is not merely a matter of aesthetics but also emphasizes functionality and convenience. Placing
the stairs in this manner ensures easy access for the occupants while optimizing the use of space.
In sum, the beneficiary's detailed requirements for this apartment building reflect their
commitment to creating a modern, comfortable, and functional living space. This well-thought-
out plan sets the stage for an apartment building that will likely meet the needs and expectations
of future tenants while also contributing to the local architectural landscape.

IV. Consultant Profile


Our consultant is Engr. Jose Arnel Juan, a SCEGE Faculty member in Mapua University
and also a Senior Vice President for Project Management at AVIOR Construction Management
Corporation. He is involved in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling,
researching and identifying new business opportunities, seeking new business tools and methods
and closing various social infrastructure projects nationwide as part of the corporate social
responsibility initiatives of the organization. He also prepares and allocates budgets, collaborates
with other executives and SVPs to decide on business strategies, evaluating department’s profits
and revenue, and calculates risks, ensuring compliance with company policies and local,
regional and federal regulations, and guides and supports VPs and managers.
He works also as a faculty member in his alma mater under the School of Civil,
Environmental, and Geological Engineering (SCEGE). Handled courses such as “Project
Management for Construction Engineering Management, Quantity Surveying and Specifications,
Marketing Management in Construction, Entrepreneurship in Construction, CECADD,
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Procurement and Purchasing in Construction, Environmental
Impact Studies, Management Theories and Principles, Building System Engineering, Safety
Engineering Management, Financial Management, Executive Leadership, Engineering
Leadership, Engineering Drawing 1, Drawing 2, Drawing 3, Drawing 4, Autocad, micro station

1.) Introduction:
The meeting began with a warm welcome to all attendees. The beneficiary expressed their
desire to discuss a new project, a 3-storey apartment building, and stated their preference for
identical floor plans with 2 studio units on each floor.
2.) Beneficiary's Vision:
The beneficiary elaborated on their vision for the apartment building. They emphasized the
importance of having two studio units on each floor, ensuring that they are identical in layout
and size. They also mentioned their desire for a contemporary and appealing design.
3.) The Group's Input:
The group provided insights into the feasibility of the project. They discussed design options,
layout possibilities, and the need for proper zoning and permits. They also emphasized the need
for optimizing space and ensuring that the design adheres to building codes.

It was agreed that the group will create initial design sketches based on the beneficiary's vision.

convenience, ventilation, and safety.

The meeting commenced with a warm welcome to the consultant. The consultant emphasized the
importance of carefully planning the project to ensure it aligns with the lot size and prioritizes
the occupants' well-being.

2.) Sketch Plan for Lot:

The consultant recommended that the first step is to create a sketch plan that is well-suited to the
size of the lot. This plan should maximize the use of available space while maintaining a sense of
openness and comfort.
3.) Occupant Considerations:

The consultant highlighted the significance of taking the occupants' needs into account. This
includes considering their professions and daily activities to tailor the design for maximum
convenience and functionality.

4.) Floor Plan Design:

The consultant stressed the importance of planning the floor layout for optimal convenience.
They suggested placing windows strategically to promote natural airflow and ventilation while
ensuring privacy and security. Additionally, other amenities should be placed around the units to
enhance convenience.

5.) Stair Placement:

It was emphasized that the placement of stairs should be well thought out. They should be easily
accessible and meet safety standards, ensuring that occupants can navigate them comfortably.
The consultant encouraged prioritizing safety at every step of the design process.

Planning and Brainstorming with the members of the Group

These were the planning and brainstorming stage with the members of the Group on how
to sketch the plan for our project, how to come up with each design ideas, on how to divide the
work for our member of the group, seeking an advice from our consultant and communicate to
our beneficiary of his desiring design of his apartment. Lastly, these were used to brainstorm
ideas of what kind of strategies and mindset needed for this project to be more productive and
consistent progress of this project.
VII. Reflection of the conduct CE Project 1

Engaging in a Civil Engineering project that involves meeting with a beneficiary to create
a design for their vision is a unique and enlightening experience. It emphasizes the importance of
active listening and empathy during the initial meeting, where we must truly understand the
beneficiary's desires and aspirations.

Crafting the design based on the beneficiary's vision is an artful blend of creativity and
technical expertise. It highlights the need to balance their wishes with engineering principles,
fostering functionality, sustainability, and beauty. Moreover, effective communication is key in
this collaborative endeavor, as we must convey complex engineering concepts in understandable
terms, fostering trust and mutual understanding.
Essentially, civil engineering extends beyond the mere construction of physical structures;
it involves translating aspirations into reality, ultimately contributing to a more improved and
efficient world.

Engaging in this project as a civil engineering student has been a profound journey,
encapsulating the essence of theoretical learning and hands-on application. In this project, our
group, which we named UCCM Construction, was tasked with designing a structure aligned with
a beneficiary's vision, navigating the intricacies of architectural planning using Revit,
collaborating as a cohesive group of four, and benefiting from the guidance of a consultant.

Designing a structure based on another person's vision combines creativity and


functionality. Beyond the technical specifications, we delved into understanding the beneficiary's
aspirations, constraints, and desires. This phase was a testament to the holistic nature of civil
engineering, where the end product is not merely a structure but a realization of someone's
dreams. It emphasized the importance of effective communication and empathy, skills that
extend beyond the technical toolkit of a civil engineer.

The utilization of Revit for architectural planning marked a pivotal moment in our
academic journey. The software streamlined the design process and introduced us to the
transformative world of Building Information Modeling. Creating detailed and intricate plans
demanded a synthesis of creativity and technical proficiency. It was more than just drafting; it
sculpted a vision into a tangible, digital reality. This experience illuminated the dynamic nature
of the field and the imperative to stay in touch with cutting-edge technologies.

Collaborating as a group of four added complexity and richness to the project. Each
member brought unique skills and perspectives to the table, fostering an environment of creative
exchange and mutual learning. Negotiating differing ideas, dividing responsibilities, and
synchronizing efforts were integral to our success. This group dynamic mirrored the
collaborative values of the professional world, where engineering accomplishments are rarely
solo endeavors.

The presence of a consultant also became a guiding compass in our journey. Their
experience and insights acted as a steady hand, providing a balance of mentorship and
professional advice. This collaboration elevated our project, bridging the gap between academic
exercises and industry best practices.

The challenges encountered during the project were instrumental in our growth. Whether
grappling with conflicting design preferences or overcoming technical hurdles, each obstacle
became a stepping stone toward mastery. The iterative process of refining our designs and
problem-solving honed our technical judgment. It instilled in us a resilient and adaptive
mindset—qualities that can be seen in the unpredictable environment of real-world engineering.

In conclusion, this project has been a nature of the profession—demanding, multifaceted,


and deeply rewarding. From understanding a client's dream to navigating the intricacies of Revit
and thriving in a collaborative team, each aspect has been a brushstroke in painting the portrait of
a budding civil engineer. As I carry forward the technical skills and the collaborative spirit
cultivated in this endeavor, I am equipped with the knowledge to build structures and the spirit to
construct a better future.

I learned all the things that taught me how to be an engineer within the 3 months duration
of our project. In civil engineering project 1 taught me so much, starting in planning, executing,
communicating, team-work, and time management. This journey leads me where I am capable
and tests me well where my skills suit me, especially doing the negotiation with the beneficiary,
to our consultant and to my team as well.
As a UCCM Construction group, this project taught us and gave us extraordinary lessons
on doing this job, because this project gave us more than stress but in the end, it is worth it. As
an individual of this team, this project developed my skills and improved my civil engineering
mindset on handling a project. Lastly, as a student on this course, I am willing to learn how the
real project works differently. I am hungry for this project so that our lifetime skills always
matter in the real world in the field of civil engineering.

In conclusion, CE Project 1 gave me a lot of learnings, especially in using REVIT


Software applications for our floor plans, elevations, section, etc. I am looking forward to the
next journey of this project, to learn from our consultant on another perspective of his expertise
in handling construction projects. And this project will only work and accomplish with the help
of my group mates and UCCM Construction Family. Team-work and Communication is the Key!

Developing a Project is not that easy when it is your first time. Chances of being good at
your first time is a bit firm. Struggles are just around the corner. Different time schedules,
different lodging, different people. Come together for the first time in a project development. All
the struggles are slowly vanishing as the project is slowly making developments.

While developing the project difficult situations arise since. In order for this project to be
successful each member has to adjust to their own schedule. Communicating with the team is
one the most helpful things a member can do to the team. Since it is a group work the team
started to work as a group and as a team.

Reflecting on the past weeks of this term. The CE Project does not just teach you to be a
project developer, an engineer, architect, or a contractor. The ce project teaches you to work with
a team on how to work with a team. Since in the real world all projects are developed all by a
team. Civil Engineers are not just engineers they must learn how to handle and be on a team. A
civil engineer must learn how to be a leader.
