Philippine indigenous life, and a program of ritual performances to highlight the
traditional and/or indigenous culture of the Eastern Visayan communities and
select Philippine cultural communities that will be presented by the Philippine
Arts and Culture and Theater Arts Classes as a tribute to the indigenous peoples
of the Philippines.
Date: Nov 13, 2023, 1:00 – 6:00 PM; Festival opens at 4:00 PM
Objectives:
Rationale:
The UPTC Humanities and Theater classes have been at the forefront of local
cultural heritage advocacy by way of festivals and programs through theater
performances (since the 1970s), food fairs (since 1990). These festivities
highlighted the campus experiences of students, faculty and staff and the people
who were invited to grace these affairs. These events have been sustained
through the decades because of the indefatigable and committed faculty
members in the line of Philippine cultural and arts education. The food festivals
led to a research on food and a publication of the first book on Leyte food the
SaruSaro Kita! Traditional Recipes of Leyte – that consisted of retrieved recipes
and those contributed by the Humanities students edited by Prof. Joycie D.
Alegre, published by the UP Leyte Samar Heritage Center and the Province of
Leyte. As for the installation art exhibits and theater performances as platforms
for cultural education and social consciousness, these have been serving as
platforms for creativity and social consciousness-raising among which is the
annual Kalarakan which is one of the remarkable “go-to” art events in UPTC for
more than a decade. These enhance the vibrance of community life in the
campus.
