Cartridge Trays

 Cartridge or stacked trays used for small diameter columns (< 800mm)

 Trays and envelope downcomers are stacked with tie rods and spacers.

 No column attachments for individual trays

 Supports only at the bottom of the stack of trays

 Sealing Gaskets / Foils at the Tray OD for snug fit with column ID

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 36

Cartridge Trays

 Tolerance on Column I.D. +3/-0 mm

 ASME Tolerance of + 0.5% is NOT Acceptable!
 All Welds for Column Shell to be Ground Flush
with ID of Column Shell
 Body Flanges to be Level & Square to reduce
Potential for Leakage

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 37

Z bars

 Used to avoid Modifications to

existing tray support rings and
bolting bars
 Act as extended bolting bars
for new dimensions of
downcomer widths
 Sealing of the tray at the exit
weir ends to be ensured
 One side of the Z bar is bolted
to the existing bolting bar and
other side acts as the new
bolting bar
 Z bars can be designed for
straight and sloping
downcomers

Explosion Resistant Trays

 Used where there is a possibility of an Up-

thrust load on the trays

 Up-thrust value is specified by the End Closed

User

 A counter-weight attached to one panel per

pass to allow dissipation of the sudden
upsurge and relieve the build up of
pressure

 Usually two or three consecutive trays are

designed as ERD trays depending upon
the severity of the anticipated up-thrust Open

Tolerances for Tray Columns

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 42

Alerts for Tray Columns

 Dynamic Sealing of Liquid

 Orientation of reboiler feed inlet with respect to the seal pan above

 Column Weld Attachments at Conical Sections

 Inter-pass Tray Transitions

 Locations of Thermo-wells, Pressure Gauges and Level Control

Nozzles with respect to trays and downcomers

 Setting of Weir Heights for Adjustable Weirs

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 43

Revamp Jobs

 Detailed drawings of existing columns required

 Condition of the existing column must be suitable

Column Weld Attachments

 For packed beds, column

attachments are removed barring a
small projection at column wall of
~5mm to 8mm

 Welding of new attachments needs

to be checked with respect to
column shell material

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 44

Revamp Jobs – Weld Attachments

 For tray columns, parts of support rings and bolting bars may
need to be cut to weld new attachments

 Elevation of existing manholes and process nozzles will be

constraints to fit new internals

 For cladded vessels, the welding of new attachments may not be

allowed directly on the cladding.

 For columns with lining from inside, the lining needs to be

removed up to base metal for welding new attachments and then
weld overlay is done on the joint.

 Access to the column inside to be checked for installation of new

internals

Revamp Jobs

Column Weld Attachments (contd.)

 Supports can be taken from existing support rings to the new

support rings to avoid welding to column.
 Jack screw arrangements can be used in vertical and horizontal
directions to fasten the new support rings to the column wall.

Revamp Jobs

Nozzle Modifications :-
 New Process Nozzles required to be designed for column design
pressure

 Re-inforcement calculations are required for the nozzle and

reinforcing pads

 Elevation and Orientation of New Nozzles will affect the External

Piping at Site, Location of Platforms

 Column Ovality may pose difficulty to match the profiles of the

nozzle and reinforcing pads

Product Training for Trays and Internals | 25 February 2016 | slide 49

Site Installation

 All internals to pass through Manhole ID

 Exit Weir Heights and Downcomer Clearances are important

dimensions

 In special cases, large internals may be taken through a Process

Nozzle eg. Lattice beams through a vapour nozzle

 Water is filled in the column before dumping delicate random

packings e.g. ceramic or graphite
