Uniform motion (SUVT) – Questions

Q1- Two objects are thrown up. Both are thrown up at 16 m/s, but one of them is thrown up 2 seconds later
after the first object is thrown. When and where do the objects meet?

Q2- Car A moves eastward with a constant speed of 20 m/s. Car B, at rest on the side of the road,
accelerates at 2 m/s squared to the east at precisely the instant Car A is beside it. How long does it
take for Car B to catch up to Car A?

Q3- A rock climber stands on top of a 56 m -high cliff overhanging a pool of water. He throws two
stones vertically downward 1.0 s apart and observes that they cause a single splash. The initial speed
of the first stone was 2.2 m/s.
How long after the release of the first stone does the second stone hit the water?

Q4- A pitcher throws a baseball to the batter 40 m/s and the batter hits the ball at 50 m/s. Assuming
that the length from the mound to home plate is 18.4 m, how long will it take for the ball to return to
the pitcher?

Q5- A bullet is shot from a pistol and travels at a speed of 200 m/s, hitting its target 1.5 km away. How
long will it take, from when the gun is fired, for the shooter to hear the sound of the bullet hitting the
target? Speed of sound in the air is 340ms-1.

Q6- Derive the equation V2 = U2 + 2aS. Using V = U + at and d= Ut* + ½ at ?

Q7- When and object is dropped from a height of 20.0 m above the surface of Planet Z, it will fall 5.00
m during the 2nd second of the fall. What is the acceleration on Planet Z?

Q8- A car is travelling on a road. The maximum velocity it can attain is 24m/s and the maximum
deceleration is 4m/s^2. If the car starts from rest and comes to rest after travelling 1032 m in the
shortest time of 56s what is the maximum acceleration that the car can attain?

Q9- A train normally travels at a uniform speed of 72 km/h on a long stretch of straight, level track. On
a particular day, the train must make a 2.0 min stop at a station along this track. If the train
decelerates at a uniform rate of 1.1 m/s2 and, after the stop, accelerates at a rate of 0.60 m/s2, how
much time is lost because of stopping at the station?

Q10- Trains A and B are travelling in the same direction on two parallel straight tracks , at the
moment that A passes B, A is travelling at a constant 20 m.s-1 and B is travelling at 5 m.s-1 and
accelerating at 0.5 m.s-2 .

a) How much time passes before the trains are again level?
b) How far do they travel in this time?

Q11- A speeder passes a parked police car at 29.0 m/s. Instantaneously, the police car starts from rest
with a uniform acceleration of 2.47 m/s2. Answer in units of s
Q12-You decide to drop an apple from rest from the observation platform in the statue of
liberty’s crown. The height h from which the apple is released is 44.5 meters above the
shoulders of your friend Robin H., who happens to be standing on the ground directly below
you. Robin H. shoots an arrow straight up at the same instant that you release the apple. The
initial velocity of the arrow is 24.3 m/s.

a) How long after you drop the apple will the arrow hit it?

b) What is the speed of the arrow right before it strikes the apple?
