ABSTRACT

The money counting box for a college donations is an innovative solution designed to streamline the
collection and handling of physical coin donations from various sources. This technology integrates an
automated money counting mechanism into the college donation box. Donors can conveniently deposit their
money into the box, which accurately counts and records the value of the money in real time. Additionally, the
money counting box can be designed with a digital display that shows the running total of the donated amount.
This real- time feedback provides transparency to donors and encourages them to contribute more generously.
The system can be further enhanced by incorporating digital interfaces, allowing donors to select specific
campaigns or causes to support using their money donations. The box also has multiple security features to
protect it against fraud and theft. The digital donation box is a new and innovative approach to the traditional
method of collecting donations. This system utilizes an Arduino microcontroller, which serves as the brain of
the donation box, to automate the donation process and provide greater transparency and security to donors.
The system is designed to accept various forms of payment, including all types of coins. The donation box
also incorporates an LCD that shows real-time updates on the donation, and a switch isused to display the

Digital Donation Box

INTRODUCTION

A digital donation box is a device that allows individuals to donate money to a charity or non-
profit organization electronically. Unlike traditional donation boxes, which typically involve physical coins
or bills being deposited, digital donation boxes accept payments using credit cards, debit cards, and other
electronic payment methods.Digital donation boxes can take various forms, from simple donation buttons
on websites to more sophisticated kiosks or interactive displays that enable donors to make donations in
person. Some digital donation boxes even incorporate featuressuch as touch screens, audio and video
presentations, and real-time progress indicators to encourage giving.Digital donation boxes have become
increasingly popular in recent years as more people have embraced online and mobilepayments. They offer
convenience and accessibility, allowing people to donate from anywhere at any time. They also provide
charities a new way to reach potential donors and increase their fundraising efforts.Traditional donation
boxes have been a significant source of income for non-profit organizations, religious institutions, and other
charitable causes. However, with the increased digital transactions and the current pandemic, many people
hesitate to donate using physical currency. The need for a digital donation box has become more critical
than ever. Therefore, the problem statement is to develop a digital donation box that can accept donations
using various digital payment methods such as credit/debit cards, mobile wallets, and online payment
gateways. The digital donation box should be user-friendly, secure, and accessible to people of all ages and
backgrounds. Additionally, the donation box should be able to track donations, generate reports, and
provide real-time updates to the organization or charity receiving the funds. The solution to this problem will
help organizations collect donations more efficiently and provide convenience and transparency to donors,
ultimately resulting in increased charitable contributions. An automatic coin separation digital donation box
is a device that accepts and separates coins of different denominations, counts them, and provides a digital
display of the total amount collected. This type of donation box is designed to makecollecting donations
easier and more efficient, particularly for non-profit organizations, charities, and fundraising events. The
device typically includes a coin acceptor recognising and accepting coins of different denominations. Once
the coinsare inserted, they are separated by the device into different compartments based on their
denomination. The device thencounts the coins and provides a digital display of the total amount collected.

The subject of this paper is a particularly challenging machine vision (MV) based
sorting application wherethe `part' is an Indian coin. The application is challenging in
part because of the lack of distinctive features to differentiate between denominations as
well as the variability in the features for a given denomination. Although there are coin
recognition algorithms documented in the literature, the applications are typically tested
off-line with static images of the coins. In this paper, a MV-based system for on-line
recognition and counting of Indian coins moving on a conveyor is evaluated. The accuracy
and performance of three different techniques are compared: particle classification, pattern
matching and geometric matching. The conclusion is that none of these three
techniques produced acceptable results, where the goal was to achieve 95% accuracy at
1000 coins/min.

The automatic coin recognition system can be classified as Mechanical method based
systems, Electromagnetic method based systems and Image processing based systems. The
mechanical method based systems use parameters like diameter or radius, thickness, weight
and magnetism of the coin to differentiate between the coins. But these parameters cannot be
used to differentiate between the different materials of the coins. It means if we provide two
coins one original and other fake having same diameter, thickness, weight and magnetism but
with different materials to mechanical method based coin recognition system then it will treat
both the coins as original coin so these systems can be fooled easily. The electromagnetic
method based systems can differentiate between different materials because in these systems
the coins are passed through an oscillating coil at a certain frequency and different materials
bring different changes in the amplitude and direction of frequency. So these changes and the
other parameters like diameter, thickness, weight and magnetism can be used to differentiate
between coins. The electromagnetic method based coin recognition systems improve the
accuracy of recognition but still they can be fooled by some game coins. In the recent years
coin recognition systems based on images have also come into picture. In these systems first
of all the Image of the coin to be recognized is taken either by camera or by some scanning.
Then these images are processed by using various techniques of image processing like FFT.
Gabor Wavelets, DCT, edge detection, segmentation, image subtraction and various features
are extracted from the images.

REQUIREMENT ANALYSIS

 Arduino UNO
Arduino Uno is based on the ATmega328P microcontroller, a popular open-source microcontroller board. It
is one ofthe Arduino family's most popular boards and an excellent choice for novice and expert users.
The board contains a 16 MHz quartz crystal oscillator, six analogue input pins, 14 digital input/output pins,
a USB connector for power and programming, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. An external
power sourceor a USB connection may power it.
The Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE), a free piece of software that enables users to
create, compile, and upload code to the board, may be used to programme the Arduino Uno board. The IDE
makes it simple for newcomers to use a condensed version of the C++ programming language.
The board is extensively utilised for various Mini Project-Is, including Internet of Things (IoT) applications,
home automation, and robots. A versatile and adaptable platform for experimentation and prototyping, it is also
compatible with various sensors, shields, and other add-ons.

 Coin Validator
A coin acceptor, also known as a coin validator or coin mechanism, is a device that is commonly used in
various machines and systems to accept and validate coins as a form of payment or token. These devices are
often found in vending machines, arcade games, public transportation ticket machines, and other automated
systems.

 IR Sensor
An infrared sensor, often known as an IR sensor, is a sensor that picks up infrared radiation from its
surroundings. Electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength that is longer than visible light but shorter than
radio waves, is referred to as infrared radiation.Object identification, temperature monitoring, motion
detection, and remote-control systems are just a few of theuses for IR sensors. They work by detecting the
intensity of the infrared radiation emitted by an object or by detecting changes in the amount of infrared
radiation in the environment.
Passive and active IR sensors are the two primary types of IR sensors. Active IR sensors generate infrared
radiation and detect the reflected radiation, as opposed to passive IR sensors, which detect the natural
radiation that an item or person emits. Active IR sensors are commonly used in remote control systems, such
as TV remotes, where they emit infrared radiation picked up by a receiver on the controlled device.IR
sensors can also be classified based on their detection range, with short-range sensors typically used for
object detection and motion detection and long-range sensors used for temperature measurement and remote
sensing. The cross- platform Arduino Integrated Development Environment was created using C and C++
functions. It is employed to create and upload code to Arduino boards. A standard licence under which the
IDE's source code is distributed is te GNU General Public License, version 2.

With unique coding guidelines, the Arduino IDE uses languages like C and C++. A software library that is
useful for several tasks, such as wiring Mini Project-Is, is provided by the Arduino IDE. Starting the sketch and
the main programme loop are two essential operations for user- written codebuilt, linked, and finally turned into
an executable programme using the GNU toolchain included with the IDE.

 I2C LCD
I2C LCD is a type of liquid crystal display (LCD) that uses the I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) protocol for
communication with a microcontroller or other device. SDA (Serial Data Line) and SCL (Serial Clock Line)
are two signal channels used by the I2C serial communication protocol to connect devices.
The I2C LCD typically consists of a display module with an integrated I2C interface module. The display
module can be 16x2 or 20x4 characters, depending on the size. The I2C interface module is usually based on
a chip like PCF8574 or MCP23008, which acts as an I/O expander for the microcontroller.

 IC regulator 7805 –

The 7805 Voltage Regulator IC is a commonly used voltage regulator that finds its
application in most of the electronics Mini Project-Is. It provides a constant +5V output
voltage for a variable input voltage supply.

Pin Number Pin Name Description

1 Input (V+) Unregulated Input Voltage

2 Ground (Gnd) Connected to Ground

3 Output (Vo) Outputs Regulated +5V

7805 Regulator Features

 5V Positive Voltage Regulator

 Minimum Input Voltage is 7V
 Maximum Input Voltage is 25V
 Operating current (IQ) is 5mA

7805 as +5V Voltage Regulator

This is a typical application circuit of the 7805 IC. We just need two capacitors of vale 33uf
and 0.1uf to get this IC working.

The input capacitor 0.33uF is a ceramic capacitor that deals with input inductance problem and
the output capacitor 0.1uF is also a ceramic capacitor that adds to the stability of the circuit.

14

These capacitors should be placed close to the terminals for them to work effectively. Also they
should be of ceramic type, since ceramic capacitors are faster than electrolytic.

7805 as adjustable output Regulator

This IC can also act as an adjustable output voltage regulator, meaning you can also control the
output voltage for your desired value using the below circuit.

Here, the input voltage can be anywhere between 9V-25V, and the output voltage can be adjusted
using the value of resistance R1 and R2. The value can be calculated using the below formulae.

Where, Vxx =5, IQ = 5*10-3

7805 Applications

 Power Supply Discription

Arduino controller requires +5V supply for its working. This is obtained by
battery connected as power source which has output of 12V so to convert it to
+5V. This series of fixed-voltage integrated-circuit voltage regulators is
designed for a wide range of applications. These applications include on-card
regulation for elimination of noise and distribution problems associated with
single-point regulation. Each of these regulators can deliver up to 1.5 A of
output current. The internal current- limiting and thermal-shutdown features of
these regulators essentially make them immune to overload. In addition to use as
fixed-voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to
obtain adjustable output voltages and currents, and also can be used as the
power-pass element in precision regulators

 VOLTAGE REGULATED POWER SUPPLY

The LM1117 series of adjustable and fixed voltage regulators are designed to provide up to1A output
current and to operate down to 1V input-to-output differential. The dropout voltage of the device is
guaranteed maximum 1.3V, decreasing at lower load currents. On- chip trimming adjusts the reference
voltage to 1.5%. Current limit is set to minimize the stress under overload conditions on both the
regulator and power source circuitry. The LM1117 devices are pin compatible with other three-terminal
SCSI regulators and are offered in the low- profile surface mount SOT-223 package, in the 8L SOIC
package and in the TO- 252 (DPAK) plastic package

METHODOLOGY

The methodology of a digital coin counting box involves a combination of hardware and software
components designed to accurately and efficiently count coins. Here's a simplified overview of the process:

1. Coin Input: Users deposit coins into the digital donation box through a designated input mechanism. This
could be a coin slot or a tray where users pour their loose change.
2. Sensors and Mechanisms:The digital donation box is equipped with sensors and mechanisms that detect
and measure the size, weight, and sometimes the metal composition of each coin. Optical sensors or other
types of sensors may be used to identify specific features of each coin.
3. Data Processing: The collected data from the sensors are processed by the internal software or
microcontroller. The software interprets the sensor data to determine the denomination of each coin.
4. Counting Algorithm: The counting algorithm is a crucial part of the methodology. It's a set of instructions
that the software follows to identify and count coins accurately. The algorithm takes into account the
information gathered from the sensors and makes decisions on the type and value of each coin.
5. Display: The digital donation box typically has a display screen that shows the user the ongoing count. This
real-time feedback is useful for users who want to keep track of their savings or donations.
6. Storage and Totalization: The software keeps a running total of the counted coins. This information is
stored temporarily in the memory of the device.
7. User Interaction: Depending on the design, the digital donation box may have user interaction features.
This could include buttons for users to indicate when they've finished adding coins or to select specific
settings.

IMPLEMENTATION

 TECHNOLOGY :

A) ARDUINO SOFTWARE –

The program code written for Arduino is known as a sketch. The

software used for developing such sketches for an Arduino is commonly known
as the Arduino IDE. This IDE contains the following parts in it:
 Text editor: This is where the simplified code can be written using a
simplified version of C++ programming language.

• Message area: It displays error and also gives feedback on saving and exporting
the code.

• Text: The console displays text output by the Arduino environment including
complete error messages and other information

• Console Toolbar: This toolbar contains various buttons like Verify, Upload,
New, Open, Save and Serial Monitor. On the bottom right-hand corner of the
window there displays the Development Board and the Serial Port in use.
Converter: creates Intel HEX files from absolute object modules.

Features of Arduino IDE:

21
Digital Donation Box

 The Mini Project-I file or the sketches for a Mini Project-I are saved with the file extension.

 Features such as cut / copy / paste are supported in this IDE.

 There also is a facility for finding a particular word and replacing it

with another by pressing the Ctrl + F buttons on the keyboard.
 The most basic part or the skeleton of all Arduino code will have two functions.

A coin separator is commonly seen in areas like coin vending machines, placed in public areas. The function
of the coin selector is to determine the denomination of coin as well as to forbid any fake or invalid coin,
The operation time to detect eachcoin is slow in the manual method.

S. No. Denominations Dimension (mm)

(INR)
1. 1 Rupee 22
2. 2 Rupee 23
3. 5 Rupee 25
4. 10 Rupee 25

The parameters like dimensions and outlook ofold and new coins of different denominations are considered
for classification.

The system has a hopper coupled with a vibrator base plate. It consists of ablower arrangement which is
used to blow the currency ,which may be mixed with the coins. There is also a vibrator grill, which is used
to make the coins get arranged in a linear pattern and to fall one after the other, which get collected below.
There is a screw extruder by which the coins are taken one after the other. It is then made to travel along a
conveyor, It is further processed using digital imageprocessing technology. Various algorithms like edge
detection, template matching, object tracking etc. are implemented and the coins areidentified. The
identified coin is made to fallin the four containers (for denoms of 1, 2, 5and 10 INR). It is made with
the aid of a servo motor, which turns the conveyor to the required angle. There are sensors attached to the
end terminal of the conveyor to count the coins in each denoms. The counted coins are displayed on a
LCDdisplay, by which the value can be acquired. The electronics components are mounted on the system
hardware. The mechanism of the coin sorting is placed inside the outer box. It has holes of different coin
size. Vibration motor is used for movement of coin. After sorting, the weight of thecoins is measure by
load cell below coin bins. The system has following test cases:

22
Digital Donation Box

Case 1: Initialization
The system is initialization and show welcome message on the LCD.

Case 2: Initialize the weights of collection bin

Initially the collection bins are reset to 0 as shown on LCD.

Case 3: Total Amount Display

The total amount collected in the bin is calculated according to the weight of bins and display on the LCD.

One potential issue with these machines is that they may not be able to accurately sort and count coins that
are damaged orworn, as these coins may weigh slightly less or more than their standard weight.
Additionally, some types of coins may have similar weights, which can make it difficult for the machine to
differentiate between them.
the success of a coin sorting and weighing machine depends on its accuracy and reliability. If the machine
is able to accurately sort and count coins of different denominations, it can save time and reduce errors for
businesses that handle large amounts of coins. However, if the machine is not accurate or reliable, it may
end up causing more problems than it solves.

CONCLUSION

Digital donation boxes have become increasingly popular for collecting donations within a collage
. The literature suggests that online giving has steadily increased over the past few years and that donors
who give online tend to give more frequently and in more significant amounts than those who give offline.
The success of digital donation boxes depends on factors such as user experience, security, integration with
existing systems, and donor trust. Researchers have proposed frameworks for designing and implementing
successful digital donation systems and have conducted studies to evaluate the effectiveness of different
approaches. The digital donation boxes can potentially improve donor engagement, retention, and giving
and can be an effective tool for non-profit organizations and charities to expand their fundraising efforts.
