CHAPTER 5

ANALYTICAL
TRIGONOMETRY
USING FUNDAMENTAL
IDENTITIES
Use trig identities to simplify trig
expressions
We have already been introduced to
the Trig Identities indirectly through
our work in Chapter 4…
What are reciprocals?
What are the
trig reciprocal functions?
What is a quotient?
What are the trig co-functions?
What is an even function?
What trig functions are even?
What is an odd function?
What trig functions are odd?
And now a new identity that is
very useful!!
Think of the Pythagorean
Theorem and the following
diagram of the unit circle
How might we use these two
things together?
Now, let’s move things around…
But now we need to learn
how to simplify equations
using trig identities.
The best way to understand
using identities is to try!
EXAMPLE #1: Simplify

cosθ ⋅ sec θ
+ “c os”
EXAMPLE #2: Simplify rt to “ s in”

Let’s try a challenging question…
EXAMPLE #3: Simplify

sin θ cosθ
+
1+ cosθ sin θ
At times you may need to
consider factoring expressions…
EXAMPLE #4: Factor

a. 1− cot θ
EXAMPLE #4: Factor
EXAMPLE #4: Factor

C.
One more cool trick…
EXAMPLE #5: Rewrite the following so that it is
NOT in fractional form:
EXAMPLE #6: Use substitution to rewrite the following

x = 2 tan θ
4 + x2
EXAMPLE #7: Rewrite as a single logarithm and
simplify.

ln cscθ + ln tan θ
