Work from Days:

If A can do a piece of work in n days,

then A’s one day work = 1/n

Days from work:

If A’s one-day work = 1/n,

then A can finish the work in n days

1. Somya can do a piece of work in 50 days. How many parts of the work she
can do in 20 days?
a. 1/5 b. 3/8 c. 2/5 d. ¼

Answer: C

Explanation:
If A can do a piece of work in ‘n’ days, then A's 1 day's work =1/n
1-day work of Somya = 1/50
Therefore, in 20 days she can do 20 × 1/50 = 20/50 = (2/5) th part of the work.

Mr. SURESHA R Department of Mathematics 7

a. 15 days b. 18 days c. 25 days d. 4 days

3. It was calculated that 75 men could complete a piece of work in 20 days.
When work was scheduled to commence, it was found necessary to send 25
men to another project. How much time will it take to complete the work?
A. 20 B. 30 C.40 D. None of these
Answer: B.30
Explanation:
Before: One day work = 1 / 20
One man’s one day work = 1 / (20 * 75)
Now:
No. Of workers = 50
One day work = 50 * 1 / (20 * 75)
The total no. of days to complete the work = (75 * 20) / 50 = 30 days

Based on Efficiency ( more / less speed)
1. If A is two times more efficient than B
Eg: Suppose A takes 5 days then B takes 10 days to complete the work
ie A=x days and B=2*x days

2.If A is thrice as good a workman as B, then

Ratio of work done by A and B = 3: 1.
Ratio of times taken by A and B to finish a work = 1: 3
Eg: Suppose A takes 10 days then B takes 30 days days to complete work
ie A=x days and B=3*x days

3.If A is four times more efficient than B

Eg: Suppose A takes 5 days then B takes 20 days days to complete work
ie A=x days and B=4*x days 16
Mr. SURESHA R Department of Mathematics
Based on Efficiency:
4. If A is 50% more efficient than B
ie A = x days and B = x + 50% days

5. If A takes 50% more time than B,

Eg: Suppose B takes x Days to complete work then
A takes x Days to complete work. Then A and B
complete work in an equal number of days
Here B takes x Days to complete the work
then A takes x +50% of x Days to complete work
ie A=x +50% of x days and B=x days

1. A is twice as good as workman as B and B is twice as good as workman as C. If
A and B can together finish a piece of work in 4 days, then C can do it by himself
in
a. 18, b.24, c.50, d.19,
Answer: b
Explanation: From formulae 01,
A can do the work in x days (say)
B can do the work in 2x days (A is twice as good as B)
C can do the work in 4x days (B is twice as good as C)
A in 1 day can do 1/x of the work , B in 1 day can do 1/2x of the work, They together
A and B in 1 day can do A+B= ¼
(1/x) + (1/2x)=1/4 of the work
(2x+x)/2x*x =1/4
3/2x =1/4 , 12=2x, x=6
C alone takes a 4x=4*6=24 days
Mr. SURESHA R Department of Mathematics 18
2. A and B together can do a work in 12 days. B and C together do it in 15 days. If A is
two times more efficient than C, then the days required for B alone to finish the work is
a. 38, b.74, c.20, d.10,

Answer: c
Explanation:A + B = 1/12 ----(1)
B + C= 1/15 -----(2)
A=x days, C= 2x days
A=1/x one day of work and C=1/2x one day of work
Subtract (1)-(2) A-C=1/60, 1/x-1/2x=1/60, 1/2x=1/60 , 2x= 60, x=30
A=1/30 work then A=30 days
C=1/ 60 work then C=60 days
Use (1) A + B = 1/12 , (1/30)+B=1/12 , 12(1+30B)= 30, 12+360B=30, 360B=30-12,

Problems on Time, Speed and Distance

A train covered first 120 km at a speed of 20 km an hour and then covered the remaining 180 km at a speed of 45
km an hour. Find its average speed.
a) 10 km/hr
b) 20 km/hr
c) 30 km/hr
d) None of these.
Answer: c. 30 km/hr
Explanation:
Total distance = 120 + 180 = 300 km.
Time taken for the first 120 km = 120/20 → 6 hrs.
Time taken for the next 180 km = 180/45 → 4 hrs.
Total time taken = 6 + 4 = 10 hrs.
Average Speed =Total Distance Travelled/Total Time Taken
= 300/10 = 30 km/hr.
