2 Solve Quadratic Equations by Factoring

Given quadratic equation

ax2+bx+c=0 a, b, c – real numbers, a≠ 0
3x2+8x+4=0
To solve quadratic equation means to find all the values
Of x that make left side equal right side, when substituted
Into original equation.
Solving by factoring:
AB=0
A=0 or B=0
Example 1. Solve:

a) (x+1)(x-5)=0

X+1=0 or x-5=0
X=-1 x=5

b) (x-2)(x+4)=0

x-2=0 or x+4=0

1. A rectangle has dimensions x+10 and 2x-3.
Determine the value of x that gives an area of 54.
A=LxW
A=(x+10)(2x-3)=54

2. The hypotenuse of right triangle measures 29 cm.
One leg is 1 cm shorter than the other. What are the lengths
of the legs?

X 29 x 2+(x+1)2=292 Pythagorean theorem

x 2+x2+2x+1=841
2x 2+2x+1-841=0
2x 2+2x-840=0
x+1 2(x 2+x -420)=0
2(x+21)(x-20) =0
X+21=0 x-20=0
X=-21 x=20

X=20 X+1=21
The legs are 20 cm and 21 cm.

841=292
3. At the Mini Market, as the price of milk drops, sales increase.
On an average day, a 4-L bag of milk costs $3.90 and the store
cells average of 120 bags. For each $0.10 reduction
in price of a 4-L bag, sales increase by 20 bags per day.
Price, in dollars: 3.90 – 0.10n
Number of bags: 120 + 20n,
.where n is the number of $0.10 price reductions.
The total revenue is the product of the price and number
of bags sold. Find how many price reductions will result in
revenue of $700.
Revenue: (3.90 -0.10n)(120 + 20n) =700
468 +78n-12n-2n2=700
468 +66n -2n2=700
