Singly Reinforced Beams Practice Problems

Q1. Calculate the service imposed load for the beam given below. The beam has a total length of 6.5 m
supported over the wall having thickness 500 mm. The beam is under moderate exposure conditions. Assume
fy = 415 MPa.

Q2. Find the ultimate moment capacity of a rectangular beam shown in figure given below. The beam has
effective length of 6 m .The given beam was found to be inadequate to carry the external loading and hence
repaired by gluing a steel plate of thickness 3 mm (yield strength 250 N/mm2) at the bottom of the beam.
Assume fck = 20 MPa, fy = 250 MPa and E = 2 ∗ 105 N/mm2.

Q3. Design a singly reinforced concrete beam of width 250 mm, subjected to an ultimate moment of 130 kNm.
Assume fck =20 MPa and fy = 415 MPa.

Q4. Design a cantilever beam of clear span 2.7m carrying a superimposed live load of 17.5 kN/m. Use M 25
concrete and Fe 415 steel.

Q5. Determine whether the section shown in Figure can withstand a factored applied bending moment of 100
kNm, with Ast = 2 numbers 20 diameter = 628 mm2 , = 415 MPa, and fck = 30 MPa.
Q6. A singly reinforced beam is 400 mm wide. The effective depth of beam is 560 mm and its effective cover
is 40 mm HYSD steel reinforcement, Fe 415 shall be provided. The grade of concrete is M 20. The beam
section is to be kept under reinforced. The flexural strength of beam is 180kN-m. The depth of neutral axis of
the beam section is 240 mm. Determine the area of steel reinforcement.
