WITH THE ARRIVAL OF SPANIARDS, WESTERN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WAS

- San Juan de Dios - one of the first hospitals in Manila (1578)
- Calendar using celestial bodies for references
- Engineering, and concept of irrigation
- Education system and science based courses (medicine, pharmacy, agriculture,
meteorology)
- Laboratorio Municipal - science agency of the government (1887)
- Bridges, roads, infrastructures, institutions
- Insignificant growth
- Filipino were deprived of education (education was reserved for higher class
citizens)
- Most of the instructions were about religion
- Agriculture and industry did not develop because of Manila-Acapulco trade
DURING THE AMERICAN REGIME:

Establishment of bigger school system and higher education


- Private schools
- Silliman University
- Centro Escolar
- Philippine Women’s University
- Public School
- Philippine Normal university
- University of the Philippines
- Introduction of science-based programs
- Agriculture
- Engineering
- Medicine
- Pharmacy
- Public Health
- Forestry
Established and organized the Bureau of Science
- The americans also put up the following

- Despite the aggressive promotion of education economy-based technology still lagged
behind
- The country became an importer of US manufactured products which favored the US
government and economy more
- Even the graduates of science and technology left the country because there were no
job opportunities for them.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE POST-AMERICAN ERA:
- The Bureau of Science was reorganized and became the National Science
Development (NSD)
- In the 1960s more science agencies were created:
- Philippine Investor Commission
- Philippine Coconut Research Institute
- Philippine Textile Research
- Forest Product Research
- In the 1980s NSD was reconstituted into National Science and Technology Authority
- Later in 1987 NSTA became the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)

AT THE PRESENT, DOST HAS THE FOLLOWING AGENCIES GROUPED
