CHAPTER EXERCISE ON TRIGONOMETRY

Direction: Copy and solve the following problems. Draw the figure with proper label
if needed. Write your solutions on short bond paper with one inch margin in all
sides. Use engineering lettering.

I. Transform each of the expressions in the left-hand column with the one written to
the right of it.

1. cot x (cot x + tan x) csc 2x

2. cos θ (cot θ + tan θ) csc θ

cot 2 x sec x
3. 1 + cot 2 x cos x
sin x − cos x
4. 1 − cos x sin x csc x
sin x + cos x tan x
5. cos x 2 tan x

II. Verify each of the following identities:

1 (1 − cos 4θ) + cos2 2θ = 1

6. 2
sin x cos2 x − sin x = sin 2 x
7. 1 − sin x
2 (1 − sin α)2
(sec α − tan α)2 =
8. 1 + cos 2α
2 − 2 = 4 sec2 x
9. sin x + 1 sin x − 1

2 sin θ cos2  θ  − 1 sin 2θ = sin θ

III. Solve the following completely.
11. A cadet standing 120 m. from the base of the Independence Flagpole at the
Luneta Park observes from a certain point on the ground that the angle of
elevation of the top of the pole is 35º. Find the height of the flagpole.
12. Arnold who is 175 cm. tall casts a shadow 250 cm. long. What is the angle of
elevation of the sun?
13. A plane takes off on a runway that is horizontally 915 ft. from a building, 121 ft.
high. What is the minimum angle of elevation of its take off to assure of going
over the building if it flies in a straight line?
14. A missile that was launched has 30º 20' angle of depression from the point of
launch and was known to be 1185 ft. away from the ground. Find the distance
the missile had traveled.
15. An antenna is on top of a TV transmission tower. At a point 236 m. from the
base of the tower, the angles of elevation of the top and end of the antenna are
42º 20' and 44º 10' respectively. Find the height of the tower and the height of
the antenna.
16. A man measured the angle of elevation of the top of a tower to be 70º. When
he walked 300 m. further, the angle of elevation of the top was 35º. What is the
height of the tower?
17. On a hill, inclined at an angle of 4º with the horizontal stands a vertical tower. At
point P, 62.5 m down the hill from the foot of the tower, the angle of elevation of
the top of the tower is 43º. How tall is the tower?
18. A flagpole is situated at the top of a building 115 ft. tall from a point in the same
horizontal plane as the base of the building. The angles of elevation of the top
and bottom of the flagpole are 63º and 58º respectively. How tall is the flagpole?
19. A flashlight was focused on the mirror forming an angle of 80º. The length of the
light from the flashlight to the mirror was 8 m and the length of the reflected light
to the wall was 7 m. Find the distance from the flashlight to the end of the
reflected light.
20. Two light spotted the same mark on the tower, the mark was 36 ft. from the
ground. The first light forming 97 ft. ray and 20º angle from the ground and the
second one nearer to the mark was 70 ft. from the first. Find the length of the
ray from the second light to the mark.
