“READING IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY”

NAME: CLARO M. GARCHITOREBA YEAR/SECTION/BLOCK: BSN 1C DATE: 11/25/2022

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1

Direction: Analyze the primary sources and the arguments presented in this lesson and decide on the
main issue/s using your own arguments.

Main issue: The Confusion and debate of Historian towards Antonio Pigafetta’s used word “Mazaua.”

Decision: Where it all occurred was incongruous. All plots based on Pigafetta's journal led to two
locations where he traveled with Magellan and was successful in converting people to Christianity. The
aforementioned locations are in the Visayas and Mindanao. I also wonder whether there are any other
locations that are comparable to the word and sound of "Mazaua" except those two. Neither of the two
locales can be conclusively identified as the exact site of the first Mass.

Argument/s: The phrase "Mazaua" was the only indication in Pegafetta's journal as to where in the
Philippine archipelago he saw the first Mass, which caused historical disagreement and uncertainty
among historians. But a lot of others said it was on Limawasa. It was recorded in the books for the
possible reason that those historians were the first to offer convincing reasons and supporting evidence
that it took place there. Later, fresh findings indicated that it was in Butuan City. However, none of those
can definitively demonstrate that everything occurred at that location.
