Rhetorical Implications of Mowsoof-Sifah
1) Specify/clarify - I saw a man, I saw a tall man.
2) To praise – The king , The wonderful, king, generous, magnanmous
king.
3) Insult – The ugly dumb person. Oh you’re the genius student who
got an D.
4) To make something general : Every student online, man or woman.
5) To give emphasis: The painful punishment, A single sheep

Complex Mowsoof Sifah:

A sifah, by definition, is a description of an ism. Look at the three sentences
below. The sifahs are highlighted. We see that a sifah can be a single word, a
fragment or a sentence.
The tall man came yesterday.
The tall man from Makkah came yesterday.
The tall man from Makkah who teaches Quran came yesterday.
A complex sifah is a sifah that is more than one word. It can be a fragment
or a sentence.

In order to use a complex sifah:

- If the mowsoof is proper, then the complex sifah
need to have an ism mowsool.
- If the mowsoof is common, no ism mowsool. The
sifah is simply placed after the mowsoof.
Eg: THE tall man from Makkah came: ‫الط يويل اذلي يمن َمكة‬ ‫جاء الرجل‬
A tall man from Makkah came: ‫جاء َر ُجل َط يويل يمن َمكة‬
َ

He is the tall man who teaches Quran. ‫
He is a tall man who teaches Quran. ‫

Comparing:
1. A man from Makkah came ‫اء َر ُجل يمن َمكة‬
َ ‫( َج‬what city is he a resident

of?) ‫ من مكة‬is the sifah of ‫رجل‬.

2. A man came from Makkah. ‫
َ (what direction did he come

from?) ‫ من مكة‬is the MBF for ‫جاء‬

Eg from the Quran: Surah Qasas ayah 20 and Surah YaSeen ayah 20.
